I was very fortunate to be able to travel for 3 weeks in Russia and Ukraine with some Ukrainian friends of mine, which allowed me to travel as the locals do, and stay with Russian and Ukrainian families. It was a great experience, and the hospitality that I received form everyone was amazing (as was the food!). With this series of photos I want to show some of the sights, both well known and maybe not so well known. In St. Petersburg the photos tend to be of the famous sights, of which there are many. The city is one of the most spectacular in the world, with the Hermitage, St. Isaacs Cathedral, the Blood Cathedral, Peterhof Palace, the Catherine Palace and of course the many canals.
Kiev is less well known, and doesn't have the great palaces, but it is a beautiful city, with many parks and romantic walks. The setting on hills above the Dnepr River is wonderful. The cathedrals of St. Vladimir, St. Michael, St Sophia, and the Lavra complex are must sees, especially the caves of Lavra.
Lviv is a gem of a place - a well preserved 16-17th century old town. It's not large, but the old town features cobble streets and a great ensemble of buildings that are reminicent of Venice - decaying beauty that gives a special glow of authenticity that recently renovated buildings lack.
I hope my photos show what the area is like, and help out anyone thinking of travelling there. I strongly encourage it, before it gets more well known and busy.
