I have dreamed to travel to Australia for many years. Every time, there were some reasons making me either to cancel a planed trip or to go somewhere else. At the end of 2004, I finally made the trip happen. It was a father-and-son outing. I traveled with my 13 year old son together to this trip.

It was a tight 9 days trip. Minus 2 days in the air, we had only 7 days in Australia. We spent 4 days (including the arriving day and departure days) in Sydney, 1 day in Melbourne, and 2 days in Tasmania. It was fun and rewarding.

Before the trip, I studied Australia history. Robert Hughes's "Fatal Shore" is my favorite book on this topic. Because we were tracing the history, we have decided to go to Tasmania.

We have well planed our trip. We used all the transportations along the way: airplanes, trains, ferries, cars, and city public transportations. Here are what we have done in the 7 days (not following any tour group):

(1) Visited Blue Mountain
(2) Visited Sydney Olympic Stadium
(3) Went to Manly to View Sydney
(4) Climbed Sydney Harbor Bridge
(5) Toured inside of Sydney Opera House
(6) Visited Sydney Aquarium
(7) Visited Chinese Friendship Garden in Sydney
(8) Went to the top of AMP tower (the tallest building in Sydney)
(9) Take a cruise around Sydney Harbor
(10) Strolling along the Rock, Circular Quay, Darling Harbor, and Pitt Street
(11) Watched the start of Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race (at Double bay and Watsons Bay)
(12) Visited Sydney Koala Sanctuaries – curdled Koala and wombat in our arms
(13) Toured around the city of Hobart
(14) Joined the event of Tasmania Festival “Taste of Tasmania, the first bite”
(15) Climbed Mountain Wellington (where we caught snow in the summer time)
(16) Toured Port Arthur
(17) Visited Tasmania Devil’s Park
(18) Visited Cradle mountain National Park (Visited St Clair Lake and Hiked around Dove Lake)
(19) Visited Queenstown (when Australia Opal mining town)
(20) Visited Port Devonport
(21) Took a flight from Sydney to Tasmania (Virgin Blue)
(22) Took an over night ferry from Tasmania to Melbourne (Spirit of Tasmaia)
(23) Took an over night train from Melbourne to Sydney (XPT)
(24) Toured abound Melbourne Street
(25) Took cruise along Melbourne River
(26) Went to the tallest building in Melbourne
(27) Visited the site of Australia Open Arena
(28) Visited Melbourne moving picture museum

We had a great time in Australia. There are many places we haven’t visited yet, and we’ll return the next time.

P.S. Driving in Australia is quite a challenge to someone like me who is used to driving on the right side of the road.
