My husband and myself did this beautiful hike of ±18 km with a denivelation of ±1000 m and although we were quite exausted - we are over 60 years old - i would recomend it to everybody who has the occasion to do it. Hereafter follows a description of what you can expect.

The first part of the hike is a gentel uphill slope from the Magatepopo carpark (±950 m above see level) to the Soda springs. It is a plesant ±60' walk against the sun (photo 1).
Then comes the steep slope to reach the saddle between the 2 volcanos, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. The climb takes another hour and goes over a lava field whith small steaming fumaroles everywhere (photo 2).
Once on the saddle you look over the south crater to the Ngauruhoe. After crossing the south crater and another ascent of ±60'along a ridge with spectacular vue over a huge lava landscape (photo 3) you reach the rim of the red crater (photo 4). Before you lies the spectacular red crater (photo 5) and behind towers the colourfull Ngauruhoe (photo 6). This is the highest point on the hike, 1886 m.
The first part of the descent goes for ± 30' along the rim of the red crater over a tricky path (photo 7) to the emerald lakes (photo 8,9,10). Here the colours are simply unreal!
The rest of the descent brings you within ±45'trough the central crater (photo 11) and along the blue lake. Finely the track straddles the north crater with stunning vues over Lake Rotoara and Lake Taupo (photo 12,13) and reaches the Ketetahi hut after ±60'.
The day ends with an exausting last descent over a good track - but with too many steps - and trough native bush. It takes more then 2 hours to reach the Ketetahi Car Park.
