Photographer's Note
I took this photo at the deth camp in auschwitz.
It was a very cold day. It is unimaginable to belieive some of the things that took place here until they hit you in the face. I tried to catch the vastness of the place using repetion of the fence and chimneys.
As requisted- here a few more details.
In 1997 I went to Poland with my school. It's a rememberance trip that many 11th graders take in Israel.
It is not only to see the places where 6 million jews perished, but also to see the heritage they left behind. Whole towns were wiped out and little remains today. thus, it's important to try and preserve and by doing so- remember.
this part of Auschwitz is where (mainly) jews were sent to work and held in awful conditions, my grandmother was one of them. It is also where medical experiments were held by mengale. Nearby is the concentration camp.

Bouleversante photo.
Le claire-obscure ainsi que la perspective fuyante donne une intensitι dramatique ΰ cette photo.
Merci Jonathan de publier ce document pour la mιmoire universelle.

well youve caught the eeriness of this place really well.
the place very very cold because of the tone that you used for this shot. it's excellent. youve made excellent use of your wide angle lens as can be seen with the fence fading away into the horizon.
perhaps you should write more about this photograph
take care

Yes, I think you've cuaght the atmosphere well, and the grainy B&W treatment works well. Aleksander, I think you must read the note again. The horrors of the place are hinted at by Jonathan, and I don't think there's anyone in the World (at least not on TrekEarth) who doesn't know what happened there.

Excellent composition, great perspective, the dunkle mood in the light & contrast is excellent, good colour tone.
Great strong photo, it is still in my mind, I was there fore 35 years ago.

Nothing to add here. The memories are vivid. The picture brings them all back.

i think you did well , both in reminding TE members of this piece of sad history and inhumanity, and technicallywise in shooting the way you did ( b&w, perspective going towards the harsher light thus leading our eyes inevitably to this...).. congrats and thanks for sharing

A very powerful picture. The composition is good, reminding of the size of the place, but also the lack of hope because every side is closed and there's no way to escape. The tones almost make it look like a picture taken at the time, except all that remains now are ghosts.
Thanks for sharing and remembering.

This is a job very well done. The composition is more than excellent with all those perfectly displayed repetitive patterns and the sepia choice. Apart from the technical excellence it also evokes a grim atmosphere and recalls memories of a place that should not be forgotten.

You did a good job. It looks extremely sad and depressing. And you're right - the repetition of motives makes it look very vast.

perfect composition! the way the contrast, brightness and sharpness fades away towards the centre of the frame is very powerful! i usually don't like solid black frames but in this case it is very appropriate. congratulations! this goes to my favs.

I am moved by your picture, Jonathan. The white light that draws one's eye to the center of the photograph is a grim suggestion as to the product of this factory of death. thank you for this picture. pd

A powerful picture Jonathan that draws the eye in different ways - to search for understanding and into the picture through that long walk to the vanishing point. My son went to Aushwitz a year ago and and was powerfully affected by it.

it is very strange to visit this place and even, it is possible to think what we are doing here. Great framed and good choice for black and white. I think the color get soft the place.

Shalom!
A very striking, beautiful as equally painful photograph. Although the camp, held so many prisoners it was so small. It's such a tragedy, and it seems that this picture seems to describe perfectly the atmosphere that you feel when you enter the camp. Even on a sunny day. The deadly silence.
It seems that a fog seems to roll in, at the distance. The fog that remembers this place as a shadow of tyranny and murder. The worst event in the history of humanity, and the history of the Jewish people.
Shalom
