Photographer's Note
Surprisingly there aren't very many photos of this beautiful building on this site. Even though it is only an hour from Sana'a. So thought I would add to the collection.
This is a former palace for the Imam Yahya. It actually isn't as old as one would first imagine (especially considering the age of some of the sites in Yemen). It was built as a summer palace in the 1930's. Though, interestingly it was built on the foundations of a prehistoric ruin. With the well dating from that time (which you can see inside if you go in).
The history of Imam Yahya is actually also quite fascinating. He ruled the country as a monarch, with some advisers (mostly members of his family...haha) and actually held daily meetings in front of this palace under an umbrella for decisions regarding the country. He also kept the National Treasury in a box under his bed! He wanted to keep Yemen isolated without change from the outside world, and attempted to do so. But to keep the competing tribes at bay, he sent his army officers abroad to gain training. When they returned, they murdered the Imam in an attempted coup. The things you learn studying abroad!!!

Very interesting short history regarding this palace. Too bad for the Iman having his own people dispose of him. The image is very clear and the warm colours of the building very appealing. I find it interesting the way the building seem carved out of the rock. Beautiful place. Thanks David.

Hi David ,
Like the NG shots. Brilliant angle of view, nice timing and the inclusion of human interest looks wonderful. The architecture seperation against the blue sky looks good.
A perfect travel shot.

hello David,
what an amazing architecture , almost ten levels , built over a rock in that very particular Yemenite style where men gather in the the top floors (so the question is :do they have any lift inside that palace ?)
great shot and POV and thanks for the note
au revoir

Hello there David,
The great colour saturation is what first drew me to this shot, nice sky blue, clay/stone coloured architecture with the green tree and then WHAM! the black cloaked people adding that extra bit of interest. Very well done!
Your note is very imformative - thanks

...damn, that's nice.
Really nothing much to say about this one Dave. I put it in my favorites, so it's good, much better than anything I got in the Wadi. Colors are spectacular. Your timing is perfect, catching the women and people walking by. Great sky...that's about it. If I have to nitpick, I would say it could be sharper, not that it's not sharp...but I'm trying to find something wrong with it. A great looking shot. I'd have to go through your portfolio again to be sure, but I think this is my favorite one out of all your pics.
Great work

Hello David,
This architecture is simply stunning! It is amazing how they were able to perch the palace atop that giant rock. Your presentation is wonderful, with the green and red colors in the bottom of the frame to offset all the shades of brown on top. Great clarity too, that lets us really enjoy the details of this amazing place.

Hello David! Another superb composition of this very exotic location. Your POV really emphasizes its great height and multi-level construction. The inclusion of the villagers at the bottom really adds to the mystique for me as well. The results are very sharp but I do detect a slight halo around the upper right edge of the building, perhaps a little too much sharpening. But it does not distract, very well done!

Good color saturation, especially green is really beautiful. It's very nice accent that the girl in red clothes is looking at you. Composition and Sharpnes are exquisite.
