Photographer's Note
This is an Air France Airbus A340 landing at Princess Juliana Airport in St. Maarten, DWI. The photo was taken from the deck of the Sunset Beach Bar. It is a daily routine for visitors to St Martin/Maarten to stand on the beach and get sand blasted by jet blast (see Workshop).
The airport is famous for its short landing strip only 2,180 metres/7,152 ft,[6] which is barely enough for heavy jets. Because of this, the planes approach the island flying extremely low, right over Maho Beach. Countless photos of large jets flying at 10--20 m/30-60 ft over relaxing tourists at the beach have been dismissed as photoshopped many times, but are nevertheless real. For this reason as well it has become a favorite for planespotters.

Hi Asa
Finally I see a photo of this beach with a plane that I believe is not "photoshopped". I could hardly believe the similar photos I saw before.
This is really amazing. I'd like to go there just to take pictures from the plane window, then pictures like yours, then go back home in the first flight. It's certainly impossible to relax with the noise and pollution.
Your picture has a great plus: the bird in same course of the plane.

Me again :)
As i'm working at the airport, it is not a theme i comment on very often, you know, i'm here to relax, hehe ;) But this must be really something for the spotters, kind of one and only spot. And yes, i've seen some movies from this place, but here i really love the seagull apparently racing with the "bigger fellow". Great timing and quite enough sharpness on the plane.
Be well,

Hi Asa,
as you say, this is a wellknown place there are hundreds of photographs of it. But always interesting to see and to make some comments to this one.
Probably it is difficult to get a good artistic picture: almost impossible to choose a preferred point of view, complicated background and much light. The interesting part is of course the strange conditions that those bathers have to bear during their short two-weeks-break after one year standing nonsenses of the boss.
I do not like on the other hand how the heads of the tourist intrude in the foreground. I have tried how the picture would be without them and does not work good because you loose a reference. Perhaps would be better to have see a part of the of them.
I like the seagull that seems to make a race against the plane to see who reaches first the end of the landing strip. It is known that for long distances planes are better than seagulls but the runway is very short and the seagull maybe has a chance this time.

Hi Asa, this really is quite an incerdible photo and I can see why some people could mistake for one that has been photoshopped. It doesn't look like a great beach for putting a hat over your face and falling asleep, but it's a great picture nicely captured. I especially like the seagull that looks like its trying to mimick and race the plane!

Asa, I've seen pictures of this airport before. I just find it amazing that the runway is so close to the beach. I want to say it's extremely poor planning on the part of St. Maarten but it may be necessary considering the size of some of these islands.

Wow, what an impressive scene you show us here, Asa. It surprises me how the hell can this be a normal situation and happening all the time, everyday. It can't be healthy...or at least a relaxed place to be. I can see that you even got a seagull flying with the plane. I've never seen such a strong impact from those flying creatures. Well done and tfs.

This is amazing that this is the normal flight plan! You did well to fit the airplane, the beach and some other people all in the frame as well as a well exposed sky.

Bonjour Asa,

Hello Asa,
I happily join the chorus of admirers of the remarkable photograph. I though I had critiqued this photo before. It must be a freightening experience for beach dwellers for flight coming over so close. In Hong Kong, many years ago when the old airport was still functioning, was for the planes to fly between skyscrapers, for occupants of the buildings to look out from their offices and see the behemoths at the same level. The fleeting moment you've captured has a seagull, paralleling the plane.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hello Asa,
One couldnt imagine the roar of that beauty soaring, or for that matter searing overhead. Very impressive! You have incorporated many components to make this scene work out really well. The beach going bystanders who seem somewhat unfazed by the whole ordeal (mind you the two guys in the forefront I would like to have seen just a touch more of them in the picture).
Quite impressive, TFS this modern marvel of lunacy!

Hi Asa,
incredible, I was talking with a friend of mine of this airport few days ago. He moved to St Marteen recently. If you don't mind, I would like to post this pict in the discussion forum...
You're shot is perfect. The plane is sharper than the rest of the pict and it shows its speed.

It's almost incredible. How can tourists quietly bath in this beach, when planes land so close to their bath towels ?
Noise and danger seem to argue for a closure of this beach. Surprising ! Nevertheless, excellent picture !

Hi Asa
must be pretty impressive for plane spotters, but as a holiday resort, it's not a destination i would go for. The pollution and noise and getting sand blasted at you, would not be ideal for a relaxing holiday. Great capture though, and quite funny that the gull is flying in the same direction too.

Hi Asa.
Even blind planespotters would have had luck here. Very interesting place, thank you for showing. Workshop photo is very informative too, little overexposed, I think you could adjust for that. I have tried to apply some corrections to it, works but being shrunk for TE it looses details. You could try having original of it. It is good addition to main post.

PS.I think this beach could serve well to relieve some gastric problems, like obstruction, it would work for me. ;-)

Hi Asa,
Good shot at the right moment, because of the race between the seagull and the plane. This situation reminds me of Kerkyra/Corfu in Greece were Pontikonisi or "mouse island" is visited very often. Here you'll be at the end/beginning of the airstrip; the difference is that the planes will be +/- 100 meters above your head.

hi Asa,
it's impossible to pass this shot without a comment :) I will not comment on technical or artistic aspects of the photo [the compression is way too high, the file is barely 56K instead of 200, and it shows; the sharpness could be better, and those two heads in the foreground remind me too much of a casual shapshot. the curve of the beach is great though, I like a lot how it leads the eye through the shot], but I'll be happy to add my 2 smileys for the timing and quick reaction - that's quite a decisive moment to have the bird flying the same direction as the plane. great work in capturing this.

Kristine

Hi Asa!
This must be an incredible experience, somewhat frightening except for the people who are really used to it! And you captured the scene extremely well! Is that a sea bird in competition with the aircraft! Good shot!
I see no tourists are lying or going about their usual business! They are all on the alert. I suppose no matter how often one has experienced such a landing, it must always be quite something to see (and hear) every time!
Thanks for sharing, and have a good week!

Hi Asa,
I've heard about this place and the landing conditions there. It must been a real great sensation to see such a big bird flying over your beach towel:P Nice view, good catch moment.

Hello Asa,
I'll just pile on to the already existing commments to say that this is an amazing shot. I'm not sure how fast these planes approach the beach, so kuddos that your shot was able to capture the entire plane. Nice job!

Until I read your description, I also thought the picture was created in the Photoshop. Very nice and clear capture.

Asa,
What a dynamic capture with so much going on in this image. The landing of the Air France Airbus along with the seagull just above the beach and the people there make it a wonderfully exciting image.
Impressive - wish I could give you more than 2 points!

Unbelievable. I can"t be that close, there must be a kind of optical illusion and it is farther than it appears to be. But anyway, impressive shot, and you also managed to have a good framing and a good composition. Good work, congratulations!

Hi Asa,
A big smile from me on this :) what an amazing sight this is, all of the holiday makers sitting there without a care in thE world, while this massive jet is just feet above them! I have to be honest, I was not aware of this place, and this is a fantastic way to learn of it.
Many thanks for sharing a very unique scene.
Best wishes

Hello Asa,
My son and I would have a heyday on this beach. I would not call myself a plane spotter, but he could be when he grows older (and independent). If i show him this photo, he would ask that we go to St. Martin next year. Lovely photo, even i am tempted to suggest we go there next year.

Hi Asa,
I couldnt imagine that you made this picture in the Netherland, but reading your note I remember that I have heard of this spectacular situation in the Caribian. In fact is St Maarten since 2010 not a part of the Netherlands, but a equal partner of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

This is definitely an image to remember! I think I have seen others of this location with a similar picture, but this strikes me as particularly dramatic.

Hi Asa,
As I've looked through your gallery this evening and admired the many fine images, I can't help but return this this one featured on your profile page...and for obvious reasons! :) Wow, what an impact shot! No surprise this has been wildly popular. I can only echo the many words expressed before me, and you were definitely in the right spot at the right time to capture this jaw dropping approach. Just another day at the beach, yeah...bienvenue?!! lol take care.
Best regards,
Jason

Hi Asa,
Wow! This one was popular! And with good reason as the low flying jet lands at an aistrip adjacent to the beach. Excellent sharpness, and realistic pastel colours. I like the repetition of the red beach umbrellas. The beach looks a bit scoured out. A recent hurricane perhaps. I am sure the sand will be back again soon. Tfs!
