Photographer's Note
Another one of my shots from my 24 hours at Lake O'Hara. This has got to be one of the most scenic places I've ever visited, with huge mountains seeming to hover right over the lake, and ever changing light putting a spotlight first on one part, and then on another. Moments before this, the lake was in sun and the mountains in the shadows, but that quickly reversed, putting the spotlight on the dock and the far mountains. Very difficult exposure with the extremely contrasty light, but I concentrated on the highligh areas and let the shadows take care of themselves.

Perfect Shot Alvin! I love the canoe and dock as the anchor for the lake, mountains and sky. To my eye this is what it's all about and you've made a wonderful picture of it all. An instant favorite for me.

Another beautiful shot Alvin. I like the dark shadows all around. It makes the light on the mountain and on the dock stand out really good. Great job on the exposure. This makes me excited for summer!

Lovely photo again from O'Hara, Alvin. Beautiful light and a good use of the canoes and the boating pier as a foreground interest for the composition. That armchair on the pier is a quite surprising detail, I wouldn't mind sitting there for a few hours (or days, for that matter ;).

this is a magnificent photo skilfully composed and superbly exposed!
it's also nice to see digital photographers still using NDgrads in this age of HDR ;)

The exposure is just perfect. Amazing how there's detail in both shadows and highlights. To me the picture is a good example of how waiting for the right moment - the lighting in this case - turns a good landscape shot into a great photo. (Or did you just fire away a pick the best light/shadow distribution afterwards?)

Good tip for those who wonder how to properly control
and chose the right exposure in various situations...
Your 14mm show a lot, but I can only imagine what the
whole scene is like when you just stand there and feel
so small compared to this work of Mother Nature.
Good POV and overall contrast (maybe too harsh in shadows),
to show what you describe in your note.

Nice shot but why croping this in 4:3 format ? You are using a 3:2 format camera (D200).

Wonderful shot Alvin. I love the sunlit area in the foreground which connects to the sunlit peaks. The chair guides ones mind to imagining yourself sitting there admiring the fantastic view you've so perfectly captured. The control of exposure is a testament to your excellent technique.
Great work as always.

Hi Alvin. That's great use of the wide angle. You have some incredible clarity and image quality throughout the shot. The grad ND really did the trick on the sky. Well done Alvin!!

Hi Cormac,
Clearly 'concentrating on the highlighted areas and letting the shadows take care of themselves,' is a very effective technique. The bowl above the lake is filled with light. The light around the canoe makes a reflection that seems to be answering the call of the light above. HLJ, pat

Hi Alvin, awesome shot of the lake against the mountains. The dock with the canoes, and especially that chair really add to the scene. The lighting is good throughout, with great colour.
Thanks, John

Hi Alvin,
Sounds like 24 hours of continuous shooting at lake O'Hara, preparing to add an entry in the Guiness book ? ;-)
Exposure looks fine to me given the contrasts, and the highlights look brillant considering the snow on the right, adding this boats foreground was definitely a good idea to me as it gives this picture the necessary depth.
Have a nice day,
JEan-Yves

Hi Alvin,
Well composed with the chair on the dock humorously set out as if someone just brought it down from their parlour...The lighting is superb, with a great gleam on the rippled waters and alternating shadows and light throughout the frame. The angled pier and canoe really enhance this image. First rate.

Hi Alvin:
Tough shot here, but I think you've handled it quite admirably. The mountains on the side are a bit dark from the soft-edge grad, but I don't think overly so. Otherwise the exposure is absolutely perfect, particularly on the lake and the dock here. You've captured another wonderful scene, and once again made me want to visit Lake O'Hara. Nicely done.

Hi Alvin,
In this shot I really love the contrast between the darker foreground and the mountains basking in the sunlight. The reflection by the canoes is amazing and yet you get the blue colour of the water! Great lighting and excellent capture! Amazing work, Alvin!
