Photographer's Note
H'mong Village
Nan, Thailand
In my two days of stay in Nan and after visiting two H'mong villages, I noticed a glaring element in the daily-life of H'mong children. Most often, they are left to take care of each other. Imagine a 9 year old taking care of younger sibling? They are certainly deprived of their change to enjoy their youth, that's what I thought. But
actually, I enjoy looking at them genuinely enjoying each other's company. These two girls are no exception. Nearby them, I saw a dirty yet smiling teddy-bear-stuffed toy. I wonder who could it have belonged too.

This is another very good shot Manny, no doubt about it. However, there is something which seems not quite right to me here, I think it is due mostly to post processing. First of all, the color seems a little wrong to my eyes. It seems to be a little too orange overall. Also there is a patchiness that looks to me to be due to jpeg compression, but that shouldn't happen I think on a photo of these dimensions. I wonder if the shadow/highlight adjustments are the culprit? The young girl on the left is nicely focussed, but the younger child is a little soft. Because the younger child is more in the foreground, I wish it was the other way around. If you shot this with your brother's D100, this is something you will have to get a little adjusted to when it comes to your D70, you will have much less in the frame which is truly sharp than you did with your other camera (G2?). Slight blowouts on the white of the clothes were probably hard to avoid and are not overly distracting.
This is a very good shot Manny, but does not quite rank with your best, primarily to the jpeg patchiness as well as the slighlty out of focus child.
This is another shot where you are visible in the reflection of the eyes, that is becoming your trademark Manny. A good trademark, IMO.

Nicely frmed picture,as usual, the whole frame is filled up with the picture. I love the way you decided to crop the girl's head on the left. It supports the whole picture.

the composition here is very good - the way you cropped the girl is superb. i agree with Darren about the focus - the girl should be "sharper" a bit. i also think the colors have a bit too much of orange tone... wnyway, it is a nice picture imo, their expressions are so natural.

Very effective dirty faces with great eyes. Interesting framing works very well. I also like the DOF and the brown background. I think the image is also technically great.

My first thought about the orange cast to the girls's face was that it was due to an awning or some semi-transparent roof, but that would have cast colour on the other girl's clothes, so... Anyway I like both expressions and once again you've got them looking right at you. Very pleasing dual portrait.

Un portrait plein de mιlancolie. Les yeux des enfants expriment peu de joie. La composition est rιussie. Les couleurs et l'angle de prise de vue donnent un cτtι vιritι ιtonnant.
Trθs bien fait Manuel.
Merci.
A portrait full with melancholy. The eyes of the children express little joy. The composition is successful. The colors and the camera angle give an astonishing side truth. Very well done Manual. Thank you.

Once again a great children shot. You keep producing them. I like how you composed this one, putting the older girl up in the corner. The crop is great. As always in your shots I keep looking at the eyes.

Seems you are making a great documentary series with all the pictures of the H'mong Village kids Manny! Yes, the older one looks very serious and grown up...and a bit sad.. You have succeeded to fill up the whole picture with deep emotions and to provoke thoughts again. Great shot!

A very dear - but at the same time a bit sad - scene, Manny. The faces and eyes are again so evocative here - the serious, very grown-up look of the older sister, and the expression of the little one with the smudgy face. Kudos for your sidewards shooting angle and cropping, a very good result you got. Well done.

Very fine and touching portrait, with the dirty litlle girl as the main object and the bigger sister as background.
You got some excellent reflections in their eye's and got a great DOF. Good work indeed Manuel

Very tight crop, excellent DOF and light, superb subject. Very manny indeed! I keep repeating myself over and over again I am afraid... but it is sincere and the truth, just the truth... another great photo manny. I am glad to know that you still have many pics from that trip in thailand... the future is looking bright!

I like the way you positiond them in your frame, Manuel, with the girl half outside, and the baby in the middle. The eyes are amazing, lokks like they are hiding many stories. Very well done.

This is a great photo Manuel, and at the same time, sad. I'm glad to read in your note that you saw them enjoying each others company. I like the angle of your shot - it seems to tie them together. The soft colours on the clothes are great, as is the little baby's grubby chubby face. Thank you for sharing it.

Quite a remarkable photograph, especially since I saw the other photo of this little girl first. She seemed quite innocent and adorable in that photo by herself next to the little stuffed dog, but here, quite a different expression...almost of weariness...like a tired mother. And it looks as if this little one has given her a handful!
