Photographer's Note

Hlamo's mother watching us from behind the curtain that hangs across the door. She is a nomad woman, you can see her face and neck is wrapped with scarves to keep warm in the winter. She is standing in the door of a winter house, this one is made from cheap cinder blocks, tarp, bundled twigs, and packed adobe type clay. None of which is visible from this photo. But the inside of the house does contain the warmth that can be created with a nice fire of dried yak dung. She is wearing her traditional coat off one shoulder, this is normal. You only wear it on both shoulders when you are both outside and not using your hands. She has an amulet, special scraps of cloth given by lamas or high monks at temples and beads around her neck... this is not her house, this is her daughter's house, she lives full time in a tent, even in the winter.
