Photographer's Note

This is the view of the ceiling above the main altar in the Hagia Sophia. The clearly Christian imagery of Mary with Child is fitting in a church, but if you look closer, you'll see discs along the lower ends of the wall which are Islamic. While Mehmet the Conqueror turned the old Byzantine church into a mosque, he covered up many of the wall frescoes and mosaics, but I guess this one was too high to reach (or he really liked the way it looked!)

What really amazed me was the way the lighting from the windows contrasts with this surreal glow enveloping the figures on top - its really hard to miss. I only wish the glare from the windows could have been cut down (I could probably dim them in Photoshop...)
