Photographer's Note
My New Year wish is for the bush (wild) fires around Australia to go away. It is a bit like when we were in Alaska earlier this year except they were waiting for snow to put the fires out whilst we need rain.
I took this photo this afternoon from the same place as I took my "Smoke! Fire! photo over 2 weeks ago (Follow the Mittagong link above to see that one). Since then the fires have moved through inaccessible country towards us, bursting out occasionally to destroy houses in small settlements. Today there is a weird orange red glow to the smoke. Our house is behind the tree on the right.
The trees in the foreground are dead from drought, not fire.
In the workshop is a photo of yesterday's sun shining through the smoke at about 6:45 pm.
Today we've been advised to get ready to evacuate if fire gets much closer so we're busy packing. Sorry not to be optimistic at this time of year.
Best in the large view.

Hello dear Ian, I do not know what to say (or write). It is such a tragedy and still no end to it. I am so sorry for the people who lost their homes and also for incredible amount of animals that are dead.
I wish Australia that the fires go away, I wish your family that you are safe and finally have fresh air.
Beautiful picture with the eucalyptuses, interesting golden colour (stupid joke).
Be strong. All the best in 2010.

Dear Ian,
Indeed, at the dawn of this new decade, we wonder what will become of our world !
A very meaningful picture about an event concerning the whole planet !
I still send you all my best wishes for the New Year, hoping that we humans at last take some real action against global warming.
Kindest regards.

Hello Ian,
It is an "interesting" photo but mainly very upsetting and disturbing. I just heard news on the radio about the fires spreading rapidly also in Victoria and people in places fleeing by boat. It is terrible and I can only hope you and your family and everybody else will be safe.
For a happier 2020,
Gert

Hi Ian,
I am sorry to hear about this terrible disaster touching your personal life do directly.
I wish you it gets back to normal as soon as possible!
Yesterday I watched a short movie recorder in one of my favourite national parks in US southwest. Desert landscape of Joshua Tree NP covered by thick layers of abundant snow! That landscape rarely sees even rain and today is covered with deep snow. It was a shock, and i would think it is a fake news except Joshua trees are so characteristic in shape..
I wish your wish gets fulfilled!

Hello Ian,
I'm sure we are all shocked and alarmed by the conditions in Australia.
There seems to be no respite from these spreading fires and incredible temperatures!
Surely the devastation to humans and wildlife alike, will alert everyone to their need to actively educe the carbon emissions!
Your photograph is powerful!
The danger is evident!
I sincerely hope that you and your property will be safe,
Would that there was some way of ending these fires .... rain would be a great, natural answer.
Our best fro 2020,
Bev :-)

Hello Ian,
I am following the news from Australia, and I truly hope there will be an end to this horrible situation very soon. Your photo is a stark documentary of what is going on, and I hope that since taking this photo things have not gotten worse where you live. The smoke and haze hanging in the air are ominous. Stay safe, and here's hoping that 2020 will be much better.

Hi Ian,the new year certainly does not start well if they advised you to evacuate the area, I saw the terrible fires and drought on TV that have lasted for too many days, and in your photo you can very well see the effect of the lack of rain and smoke . I wish all Australians that this will be resolved as soon as possible and best wishes for a good 2020 to you and your family.Luciano

Hello Ian!
Mene mene tekel uparsim!
Your image shows the writing an the wall, and I hope you have no loss of life or property to complain!
What we need is a general insight that we're lacking a perspective into a liveable climate.

Hi Ian,
The fires in Qld have eased off after some much needed rain that fell on Christmas Eve. I hope you get rain soon. Canberra air pollution from smoke was off the scale. Beijing sometimes exceeds 376 micrograms per cubic metre but Canberra has reached 434! https://www.sbs.com.au/news/canberra-s-air-quality-is-the-worst-in-the-world-as-bushfire-smoke-shrouds-capital

Hi Ian,
It is a sad view. Everything is covered in smoke cloud. Those bush fires are very persistent this season. And they are often mentioned even in Finnish news.
