Photographer's Note
I chose this one as my first upload from my recent trip to Santorini as this shows so well the nature of this small group of islands. Santorini is essentially what remains after an enormous volcanic eruption about 3600 years ago created the current caldera. A giant central, rectangular lagoon, is surrounded by 300 m high, steep cliffs on three sides. This shot was taken on Nea Kameni, a volcano island which has grown during last 300 years on a series of eruptions. The last eruption happened in 1950.
Towns of Imerovigli and Fira are visible on the edge of cliffs. That cruise ship is Mein Schiff 1, a ship of TUI Cruices, launched in 1995.

Hello Kari,
A steep wall, white buildings that could be mistaken for snow, a big boat, a small boat, a Greek flag and tourists walking across the lava field. This photo sums up just about all you need to know about Santorini. There's also a nice balance of light and dark blue and different tones of brown rocks. It's impressive how much that can be seen in just one picture.

Hello Kari,
Cruise ships usually look enormous, but this one gets dwarfed by the impressive cliffs. Fantastic contrast. The shapes and textures of the volcanic cliffs and rocks are also beautiful and the white town covers the tops of the cliffs so beautifully too.

Hello Kari,
The island of Santorini is one of the most impressive places I've visited in Europe.
This is a very well composed picture with the smaller volcano island and the row of visitors on the trail as an attractive foreground.
The large ship is placed ideally on the image.
Of course the white town high on the cliffs is all about the place!

Hello Kari,
You have clearly shown the details of the dark, volcanic rocks and what a strong contrast they make with the snow white buildings on the edge of the cliff.
It's a very well composed photograph, the deep blue water perfectly sandwiched between the slices of rock, the cruise ship making a well positioned focal point.

Hello Kari,
Let's hope Agung in Bali doesn't go the same way as Santorini which was a ranking of VEI-7, the 2nd highest & equal to Campanian Ignimbrite VEI-7 eruption near Naples in Italy millennia ago. At least 100 km3 ejected, 100 times bigger than Mt St Helens in 1980! Huge tsunamis that hit the coast of Crete. I have seen volcanoes in Indonesia, Japan and New Zealand so I saved my $25 euro tour fee for the boat to Milos. But good to see what I missed. Tfs!

Je me souviens d'avoir pris une photo semblable mais ΰ partir du bateau de croisiθre. Tout ces gens qui montent le volcan ont beaucoup de courage .

Fascinating picture with the long line of the white houses at the top of the steeps cliffs. But also the large and the small ship, the lonely flag and all the tourist walking on the rocks in front contribute to this splendid image.

this is a great start for obvious reasons. Nice to have the fg and bg separation with the large body of water in the middle, and the towns up on the cliff tops. nice one.

I only saw this Vocano caldera from high above through a plane's window (have a picture on my gallery).
The big ship and the white houses on top of the cliff are impressive elements on the scene.
