Photographer's Note
This is taken on the Queen's Garden Trail in Bryce Canyon. This is a smaller hoodoo. Bryce canyon can be a beautiful place but very difficult to photograph well. There are strong contrasts everywhere and here you can see the deep-blue sky, red rocks, dark green trees, and a small-cloud. In this tug-of-war I lost completely lost my highlights in the foreground. Also contributing to this was the incredibly strong sun at 8000 feet (2400 meters). To remedy this I selected just those areas in Photoshop, added noise to create some texture, then finally an 85 warming filter at 50% was added over just that area. I added a workshop to show the original with lost highlight detail. I only tell how I fixed this because I'm sure others have had this problem and could use a way to fix this.
On my next post I'll talk about the geology of hoodoos and how they are created.

Hi Steve, that's a very creative technique in your PP. It does have added texture and details to your photo. The WS comparison is very helpful. Thanks for providing the process details. I will give a try with some of my photos.
It does look a sunny, dry hot day there. I like this colorful picture with green, blue, red, and some white strongly contrast each other.
Well done POV and PP.

Hi Stephen,
In term of color and contrast, this picture is very beatiful. However, this may be my personnel feeling. I feel that the tree branch behind the hiker devides this picture into two parts, one for the hikers and other for the mountain behind.

Naret

Hi Stephen,
Excellent colour combination, that Red, Green and Blue and a little white cloud as finishing touch.
I compared the original and the posted picture. I should have like most something in between. The rock is almost to sharp.
But nevertheless a great picture.

Beautiful colored outdoors scene, Stephen, makes me want to put on my hiking shoes right away. Good to have the people included in the scene, and a nice composition with the staggered arrangement of the available elements in the frame.
I think you salvaged the photo really well. What I would try to do in this difficult situation is meter against the orange rock in the center, and then step down the exposure at least 1/3, maybe even 2/3 or 1 full stop (you can do all three without regret because hey it's digital ;-). It's always better to underexpose and restore details in post-work, whereas if the exposure of the original is too bright the details are gone forever. This is not what happened in your photo, overall the amount of textural richness is still impressive.

Hello! Nice photo. I like the vibrant colours, especially of the rock and the sky. But the photo is quite grainy: especially the trees are a bit grainy and grey, but maybe it's just me who doensn't look very well. The composition is very well. I like the human aspect here.

I like this photo for its subject, composition and quality. I think the front is a bit hot but for the most part great. Great idea to have people out enjoying the parks.

Hi Stephen
I like this one. Good presentation of the landscape, very crisp, clear colours. Not least is it good to have the person there for some scaling. Very well made this one.

It'a a beautifully composed photo Stephan! There is tremendous contrast in the picture in everything you look at. I would say you have done a good job with the PP. work.
The sky is extremely amazing. I had never seen anything that blue before, at least in the original. Nice!
cheers,
