Photographer's Note
Gouda cheese has been traded on the Goudse kaasmarkt for more than three centuries. Nowadays it is open from mid-June until August, every Thursday morning between 10 am and 12:30 pm, Farmers from the region gather to have their cheese weighed, tasted and priced. The Gouda cheese market is surrounded by many exhibitions of authentic Dutch professions, from cheese production to clog making and buttermilk preparation. Gouda is a city and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. Gouda, which was granted city rights in 1272, is famous for its Gouda cheese, smoking pipes, and 15th-century city hall.
In the Middle Ages, a settlement was founded at the location of the current city by the Van der Goude family, who built a fortified castle alongside the banks of the Gouwe River, from which the family and the city took its name. The area, originally marshland, developed over the course of two centuries. By 1225, a canal was linked to the Gouwe and its estuary was transformed into a harbour. Gouda's array of historic churches and other buildings makes it a very popular day trip destination.

Hi asa, nice very colourful photo of the Dutch lady with cheese. beautiful typical hat and shoes. i was lately in holland and when was the opportunity I went to cheese shops to try some specialities. The best was green one with basilicum.

I see one year ago you was in Holland, and found the chees market from Gouda.
indeed one wonderful traditional market.

Hello Asa,
It's nice to see the stereotypical costumes, even though most people don't wear them anymore. For example, the Indians I saw in the USA are far more likely to be wearing a suit & tie, or standard Western attire of jeans and t shirt, than the old feather head dresses from centuries ago. Good color & sharpness. Holland is justifiably famous for its Edam cheese. Tfs!

Hi Asa,
this is a very 'tempting' view - with all these bright orange cheeses lying in raws :)The lady looks even more picturesque! Those slightly blurred flowers in the upper right corner add the necessary compositional (and color) balance to the photo.

Looking at your recent pictures I couldn’t resist to critique this one. I have been a few times in Gouda, but that was to listen for a good jazz, but maybe next time I’ll go to the “kaasmarkt” to look at these “Dutch welfare”.
