Photographer's Note
Ahmad Shah completed the Jami Masjid in 1424 AD, just a century after the congregational mosque in Cambay, to the south. In its day, this was possibly the largest and grandest mosque in India. By way of comparison with Cambay, the minars are more buttress-like while the decoration is more highly elaborated. Built on a hypostyle plan, the courtyard is surrounded on the north, east and south by pillared colonnades consisting in one aisle, and on the west by the pillared prayer hall (liwan, this photo). Here are 260 closely set Jaina temple pillars that support 15 domes, in three aisles, the central one larger. There are five mihrabs decorated in coloured marble.
