Photographer's Note

Rhodes (Greek: Ρόδος Rhσdhos; Italian Rodi; Ladino: Rodi or Rodes; Ottoman Turkish: ردوس Rodos) is the largest of the Dodecanese islands in terms of both land area and population, situated in eastern Aegean Sea. This Greek island lies approximately 18 km to the west of the Turkish shores, situated between the Greek mainland and the island of Cyprus. As of 2001, it has a population of 117,007 of which 53,709 reside in the capital city of the island.

Orffeos Street is a wide road with tourist shops and restaurants near the Gate of Saint Anthony, the Grand Master Palace and the Suleiman Mosque which connects with Socratous street, another main shopping street of the old town.
In 1523 to 1912, the Ottomans built the mosques, during their occupation. On the domes and high minarets with the small balconies, the mullah used to call the faithful to pray with him. The one you see on the picture is the red mosque of Suleiman. It is located on top of Socratous Street. It was rebuilt in the year 1808. The original was built in 1523 to celebrate the victory of Suleiman, over the Knights of St. John.

History

The earliest known settlers were the Dorians c. 1000 BC. During the Classical period the island's affiliations vacillated between Athens, Sparta, and Persia in attempts to preserve a balance of power. A devastating earthquake c. 225 BC destroyed the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. In the medieval period Rhodes was occupied by the Byzantines, Muslims, and Knights of St. John (see Knights of Malta). The knights converted the island into a fortress and held it for two centuries until 1523, when the Turks took control. In 1912 it was taken from Turkey by Italy, and in 1947 it was awarded by treaty to Greece. A year-round tourist industry has brought prosperity to the island.

this picture is so full of relaxed hot weather night atmosphere that it makes me dream about holiday (having a 10 month baby I can only dream about it :-] though). I love the colours, the rush in the street, the strong triangular composition.

Hi George,
Very nice daily life capture. There seems to be a lot happening here, lots of good detail to explore.
Good composition, I like the foreground table being close to camera and the space on the left of frame to lead up to the couple with the baby stroller.
Colours are warm and inviting, sharps are good and the exposure is excellent.

Hi George,
This is apparently at the peak of the tourist season in August. A warm and very pleasant night where people are fulfilling are their holiday dreams, before going back to their tedious jobs somewhere else. But here they are indeed enjoying themselves, and so are we, by just watching this image!

A great photo of Rhodes, a place I really enjoyed visiting although I was there at the end of the season so much quieter. A good street scene although it may get a little fuzzy in the background.
