Photographer's Note
The Chassιe Area is a redevelopment of a former military compound in the inner city of Breda.. The urban plan was made by Rem Koolhaas from the OMA (Office of Metropolitan Architecture) . The public spaces and landscaping was designed by West8.
The area consists of terraced housing, apartments, the city office, a museum (in the former barracks) a theatre, a pop music stage (partly housed in the former officers quarters of the barracks) surrounded by a park.
Displayed here is the section with the 3 storey Theaterhouses, which consists of three rows, called Vaudeville, Grand Theatre , Opera (prices between 300 and 500 K €). The names are inspired by Herman Herzbergers Chassιe Theater nearby. They are designed by Theo van Esch of the Architecten Werkgroep Tilburg.
A speciality is that the houses and apartments have no private gardens – as you van see here they have a direct access to the public space of the Chassιe Square which in fact is the roof of the underground parking (serviced by lifts). The concrete roof is lined with Portuguese granite.
Building residential areas this way forms a break with Dutch tradition. Most tenants and house owners love their garden with adjacent parking space. The last ten years this is changing a bit. I like this – it adds to the feeling of urban modernity and transparency.
In the background the new Municipal office 1a, by Claus & Kaan architects. The office is a part of the outer ring of the Chassιe area and It’s placed on pillars to make visual contact with the old town. To keep out the noise a major part of the space between the pillars is glass
It was damp & foggy and a wonderful lens flare was the result.
PCS tech (16 bit/channel mode): tilt corrected, cropped, saturation (master, reds, yellows) boosted/altered, adjusted levels, applied the median noise filter to the sky, USM-ed in lab colour mode, frame added and saved for the web.

Spectacular use of the dim light, it seems to be an exposure even longer.

Wow Bert. The most important in this photo is the perfect lighting for a night shot like this one! The somewhat low POV is very fine choise and the depth is absolute fine! Very fine work!

How modern this one !
I like the very low angle and your view on these (ugly) buildings.....
The night-shot however, is very nice,
but the fact, that people live here...

Always nice to see such examples of urban redevelopment that appear to yield a rewarding and meaningful result. You made a fine photo of it, Bert, with a well-chosen asymmetric viewpoint to have differently angled diagonals at the left and right, which always enhances the feel of perspective greatly. The shapes add up to a pleasing geometric total, and the lighting is well captured. The lens flare is indeed a treat ;-) Again a well-done archi shot.

Very nice lighting and warm colouring of the apartment houses in this shot. The lamps have a lovely glow also, giving a warm cast over the houses. Your note was very interesting and also to see these apartments that you describe. I think it looks like a very unlived in space though. There is nothing to identify one house or apartment from another. Nothing out of place like a photo prepared for a magazine. Everything and everyone looks like they are packed neatly into these boxes. No signs of life at all. I don't think I would like to live in one of those. The photo is wonderful though, and shows us a different perspective on urban living.

Very impressive capture of this place. The lines are really nice and hard. And there is great perspective. And it is all very graphic. The lights really add to that feel of graphism with the way they seem to create a mirror like line into the distance. I really like the clean cut lines of the architecture and the clean smooth surfaces. Perhaps that is also my taste for this kind of modern architecture. I perhaps would like living here. But like Joan mentions, not for everyone, that's for sure. There is a neighborhood of townhouses and apartments of Mies van der Rohe in Detroit that is very austere in his style but set in a greener setting that I also would really like living in

This is the best of your "Urban Low Light II" line, because it has good colour opposition between cold, dark blue and warm, orange.
Perfect!

Une composition impeccable Bert! [Even if I may have tryed a higher croppping at the bottom]
Everything else is fantastic here, especially the very low point of view, the smooth & neat texture of the walls which, in combination with artifical light, makes us think we are in the heart of a "maquette", the colour repartition in many small shapes fitting perfectly with eachother.
The architectes and planners did a great job but you bring us on the best spot to discover and appreciate it. Really good!
