Photographer's Note

Once upon a time, Karni Mata attempted to bring a dead child back to life, but without success. Yama, the goddess of death, explained that the child had already been reincarnated on earth. In a snit, Karni Mata proclaimed that no one from her tribe would ever again fall into the hands of Yama. Instead when he/she died, he/she would temporarily inhabit the body of a rat, before being reborn.

Just inside the porch of the temple, the rats are fed through the offerings of devotιes. A white rat is supposed to promise good fortune, but mine never changed.
