Photographer's Note
Another picture taken on the hike out of the Colca Canyon after visiting the mine at which many of the men of Choco work. As i wrote a few posts ago, we ran out of water about halfway through the hike back to Choco.
This picture was taken after we managed the intial climb from the riverbed. The return to Choco started with 1000-1250 feet (300-375 meters) of near-vertical climb up steep, loose dust. From there our route stayed fairly level for a while, traversing across 100-150 year old Spanish ruins established on the harsh dusty plain of the ledge in the mountainside that defined the canyon.
i wanted to present the dry feeling of the landscape with this one, so for my foreground i used a backlit cactus, highlighted by a fringe of light diffracting around the needles.

This has a great sense of texture, from all those folds in the hillside, and the lighting coming from the right direction and showing the texture very well. The lone cactus makes a good focal point too. Well done!

hi sam,
i like the crop here, very tight, very well balancing three layers of the image: the rem,ote rocky one, the "midfield" with some well lit greenery and the cactus foreground mixed with shadows...
nice one,
j.

Hi sam,
This is a great shot again. Shot at the right time of day, and as mentioned the framing is excellent. I wish I had this weather when I was there.

Olα Sam, I guess that you are taking it slow, so I took the chance to make a visit to your colca series that I really love. Beautiful the way you did a tight crop of this dried landscape. Backlighting can give wonderful results and this is a good example of that. The light on the cactus is gorgeous and I love the change of color while the eyes move to the background. I might have similar ones from my trip here, but the quality is quite bad and they are all in paper.
