Photographer's Note
Sampa: Fragmented view
We’re a week in Sampa now and have seen astonishingly much of the city, expertly guided by Isabel. What a lovely time we’re having!
Although Sampa has some European aspects we have just began to really grasp the dynamics of this giant network city…. Its precarious balance between wealth and poverty, the way it grows and differentiates and attains a level of integration etc. Looking at my F30 pics from yesterday I decided to post this one. Since I was obviously attracted by the graphic appeal but also ‘cause of the symbolism.
It was shot from the 32th story of the 70 years old Banespa building in downtown Sao Paulo while switching elevators.
Tonight we will be shooting the carnival on the Sambodromo and tomorrow we three will be off to the coast of Bahia!
I'll be slow commenting on your work my friends, but I'll catch up with you later!

Hallo Bert,
Een echte onvervalste Bertolucci uit Sao Paulo. Wat heb je nog meer nodig voor een prettige zaterdagavond.
Zeer originele POV. Doe je best op het carneval. Ik heb hoge verwachtingen van je.

Hello Bert, didn't get it when I first read Sampa and only fully understood after reading your note and seing the other photographs in the theme. Original and graphical way to let us glance at the city, letting our imagination do all the work behind. Have a great journey there.

Hola Bert: How is your Brazilian? If you learn portuguesse your are near to speak spanish... I love this composition, and I dont know I found it quite Brazilian so used to the Le Corbussier mood that is so usual in the main spots of this country. Enjoy your time there! Take care.

Hi Bert,
It's really interesting the way which this glass hide and reveal the background, as a stunning and dynamic frame. Very graphical shot, and at the same time so irregular... Congratulations, and best wishes,
Angel.

Excellent shot, Bert, you managed to seamlessly apply your Bertolucci approach to the new surroundings in Sao Paolo. Good graphical setting provided by the rhythmic pattern of glass tiles, and nice effect with the see-through details on the tilted open windows. I hope the Brazil trip is going well, say hello to Isabel and the others :-). Greetings from Amsterdam (arrived at Schiphol from Tokyo and am waiting for the return flight to Stuttgart).

Hi Bert.
Your artistic eye really made something of this elevator view. On first glance I thought the buildings were toy models perched on shelves in an art museum. Superb lines and graphism, and what an amazing perspective. Very fine work, Bert. Its a keeper.

Hej Bert,
Wat een prachtige foto! Het geribbelde glas zorgt voor een geweldig effect en de schuinstaande delen maken het nog beter. Vooral doordat we zo ook enkele delen van de stad kunnen zien. Echt erg goed werk en goed gezien ook!
Groeten,

Hi, Bert.
Only you to make art with a glass window like this, very banal and commonplace in Brazil. The outcome is quite surprising and unique, as usual with you.
Regards and have a nice stay at Bahia.

Deze had ik niet gezien, nu ik was op zoek naar u en zag dat u reeds dagen geleden iets gepost had, en wel een zeer spectaulaire foto, maar dit is een van uw specialiteiten, en u doet dit goed! Mooi gedaan!

From Rotterdam to Sao Paulo your keen eye seeks out the graphism in a situation. Great effect of the ribbled glass and a sneak preview into the streets below. Very nicely exposed.

Olα Bertolucci,
muito bela essa composiηγo. Os fragmentos da cidade atravιs dessa janela. Certamente nos propicia uma vasta imaginaηγo. Ι o tipo de foto que dispensa qualquer apresentaηγo ou explicaηγo. Aprecie e pense. Parabιns!

You had a great idea. Something which many people happen to see and none of them would turn it into a beautiful picture.
I like thse kind of pictures: the normal objects which become some real piece of art.
