Photographer's Note

The Square of Thee Powers is huge, it was created to imitate the arid ancient Greek democratic spaces, with no trees, no grass, no gardens, no fountains, only sculptures.
Bruno Giorgio created this huge bronze sculpture, eight meters high, in 1959, it was named "The Warriors" to symbolize the balance between the powers, but local people named it by other name: THE CANDANGOS.
Candangos was the nickname gave to the poor workers who built this town, most of them came from the most arid and poor region of Brazil and lived in timber houses in big groups around the central part. Originally these workers should to move back to their homelands, but they stayed and built the chaotic towns around Brasilia. At the end the word Candango became the nickname of any people who live or was born in Brasilia. Curiously the name Candango came from African language, from Angola, the locals nicknamed the Portuguese as Candangos, a derogatory word for people of not elegant aspect.
In the other side of the square you can see the Planalto Palace, the place where the Brazilian president works, the Congress was at left and the Justice Palace at my back. In the 1980's, during Sarney government we suffered a terrible economic crisis and the place suffered two attempts of terrorism, a man with a bus invaded the palace and another kidnapped a big jet with hundreds of people inside and had a plan to throw the jet in the palace to kill the president, the cloudy sky avoid that.
................
