Located at the foot of the Serra do Caraηa and protected by the foothills of the espinhaηo mountain range, Catas Altas is part of the Gold Circuit along the Estrada Real. The city is 139 kilometers from the center of Belo Horizonte.
The formation of the village that gave rise to the current municipality began to take place in the late 17th century, around 1694, with the discovery of rich gold mines later called Catas Altas.
In the village, catas or garimpos, the richest and most productive mines, were located in the highest parts, that is, they were at the top of the mountain and for this reason, the current city became known as Catas Altas. “The people seeing that more and more gold was decreasing in the beds of rivers and streams, and with abundance in the high parts, they said: 'the catas are high', 'the catas are staying in higher places',' the catas are in more difficult places' ” then Catas Altas means High Minings.

No povoado, as catas ou os garimpos, as minas mais ricas e produtivas, estavam situadas nas partes mais altas, isto ι, se encontravam no alto da serra e por isso, a atual cidade ficou conhecida como Catas Altas. “O povo vendo que cada vez mais o ouro estava diminuindo nos leitos dos rios e cσrregos, e com abundβncia nas partes altas, diziam: ‘as catas estγo altas’, ‘as catas estγo ficando em lugares mais altos’, ‘as catas estγo em lugares de mais difνcil acesso’” entγo Catas Altas significa Altas Mineraηυes.
