The architect of this serpentine apartment and office block, Oscar Niemeyer, went on to design much of Brasνlia, the nation's capital. The building has the clean, white, undulating curves characteristic of his work. Although many Brazilians prefer colonial architecture, all take pride in Niemeyer's international reputation. The Copan was constructed in 1950, and its 1,850 apartments house about 4,500 people. If you want to shop in the first-floor stores, be sure to do so before dark, after which the area is overrun by prostitutes and transvestites. Metrτ: Anhangabaϊ.
