THE FORGOTTEN HISTORY OF OURO BRANCO PEOPLE

Article from: Jos Eustquio Junqueira Campos

First Episode

The priest Manoel Lopes de Carvalho was born in Salvador, Bahia state, on March 4, 1682 and killed in bonfire on 13 October 1726, at the age of 44 years in the city of Lisbon, Portugal.

Sentenced by the court of the Holy Inquisition, which held the belief and confess the crime of heresy, and persistent relapse, reason for which incurred excommunication and degradation of sacred orders.

He was vicar in the period 1717 to 1719, at the village of Santo Antnio de Ouro Branco , one of the old names of Ouro Branco town, at the time considered one of the centers of gold mining, and here speed adventurers looking for gold and rapid enrichment.

The Inquisition took measures so that no one else remember the condemned, so that the memory was erased.

According to Professor J. R. Batista Bechelaine, in his wise and enlightening report of 5/2/2008, the Estado de Minas journal, the second death of the priest was the general neglect of its existence and said: "because the people, teachers and students, the clergy and cultural and political elite of Ouro Branco, nothing is known about the priest Manoel Lopes de Carvalho, once in Minas, home of rebellious ".

Only the report of the teacher, I learned of the existence of the priest, killed by the Inquisition burned, because written reports of my knowledge of history Ouro Branco people in none of them are references to this event.

One of the largest penalties incurred, in addition to the horrible and cruel death in the fire, the baptized which was conducted by the priest Manoel Lopes de Carvalho were canceled or renegades. The people, he baptized, had to be baptized again, renamed or reubatizadas, as was written in the spelling of the time.

The notes to the margins of existing records of baptism of the 1729 Town of St. Anthony of Ouro Branco, preserved in the archives of the Archdiocese of Mariana, the vicar of the time, priest Romo Furtado de Mendona, made several notes in the records of baptism with the following wording the old spelling: Foi bautizada pelo Pe.

(It was baptized by priest Manoel Lopes de Carvalho, when here was vicar, and then burn the Law of Moyses, and because of doubts that such large errors was prudently, ordered the Bishop that all the baptized he was again, under the condition, baptized).

The history of Ouro Branco town need to know more about that person, their modes of action, their ideals, their preaching, their contacts with the parishioners, their activities, projects, ambitions, before going to meet death, burnt alive in bonfire in Lisbon, at the behest of the Inquisition.

The priest from the Inquisition was firm in his convictions on projects of religious and political reform, denied clemency and has not accepted the proposal for protection of King Dom Joo V, who sought to make him renounce his beliefs and attitudes, offering him protection.

The second person's death is the omission of its existence.

There are genuine contempt with the deceased, who made history and that in some way benefited the community.

Remain, by some authorities, procedures, behaviors, initiatives and measures, so that the memory of the people who made history and promoted the community, are erased and extinct, looking ignore them disappearing any evidence and clues of their existence and achievements, making the people is not knowing.

Is going well! But life is a long lesson in humility!

PAX Christum.

It is likely that the priest Manoel Lopes de Carvalho began building this church in 1718 because the work took 62 years and was completed in 1779.
