Photographer's Note
Here we can see the area around the banks of Vermelho river, in the other side you can see the colonial home of the most famous poet in central Brazil. Can you see her in the window and in the edge of the river at same time ?
During 19th century, in an official trip to a region in the other side of Goiαs province, a member of the government heard about an ancient cross lost in the top of a hill. The Portuguese had a usage of put a cross in the new lands they had conquered and it was told this was one put there by the famous Bandeirante, a hunter of gold or something valuable (nicknamed Anhanguera) who conquered the region in the 18th century. The governor of Goiαs Province ordered the cross was removed to the capital city and few locals had enough culture to understand its historical value and even against protests it was removed. When it arrived in the capital city they build a monument and put the cross up there, anyway few years ago a big flood invaded this part of the city and took away the old cross, fortunately it was found many kilometres far and nowadays it is protected inside a museum. This one you see is a copy. Anhanguera means "Old Devil" it is a nickname put by the local indians to this bandeirante leader who stole these lands from Spain. I will told his history some day.
There was an event in the city to adopt abandoned cats and dogs, this is why that lady was in the middle of the street with a banner.
.............

Hi Jorge,
Interesting monument in the middle of the square with the wooden cross. It is interesting that the whole structure with the four columns is painted and probably made of bricks while the cross itslef remained wooden.
Very well seen and captured,
M

Hello Jorge, Interesting note about this simple but historical cross. I remember a similar cross in Cuba, left by Columbus in 1492.
I do not know why the Portuguese crosses have the upper part shorter than the side parts, like here. Original monument.
Best regards Malgo

Hi Jorge,
I saw so many ancient columns in Europe and Turkey that I can now easily identify Doric as seen here, Ionic with the curled bull horns and the more decorative Corinthian capital styles. The cyclist animates the shot. Tfs!
