Photographer's Note

The Lago Argentino consists of a central part and many fjordlike arms. One of them is periodically obstructed by the natural motion of the Perito Moreno glacier advancing toward the Magallanes (Magellan) Peninsula. This causes the water level to rise in the Brazo Rico (Rico Arm), several tens of meters above that in the Canal de los Tιmpanos (Iceberg Channel). After months or years, pressure finally breaks the ice dam, thereby restoring the connection between both sides. This occured for the last time in 2004. At this moment, the "ice gate" is open, as can be seen at the center of the photograph.
Owing to the general retreat of the glaciers in this area, it is no known whether this unique, breathtaking phenomenon will occur again in the future.
