Photographer's Note
This photo (scanned from a slide)is probably the 2nd last of my 1970s series.
The fresh food market in Port Moresby was Koki markets, set beside the sea. As in all markets like this there was always plenty happening.
Port Moresby wasn't the wet tropical paradise that you imagine - it was in a rain shadow and was relatively dry but not far away were wetter areas so you could but large and sweet pineapples, paw paws and mangos but not many greens. The local drug of choice (betel nut) was in ready supply.
On the meat front the options were magani ( a member of the Kangaroo family) and cous cous (a possum). We didn't get to try them when we were in New Guinea.
For fish we usually tried to buy straight from the canoes when they came in next to the market - to ensure freshness but I always loved this lady with her fish supply.

Hello Ian,
I wish I was there. An enviable scene from early years that include part of real life while their minds busy with daily income. Great addition of ladies and fishes but most important part is it shows poverty from 27 years ago, still nothing changed there, here also some where in the world today. It's going to worst of worst everyday. Congratulations.
Best Regards,
Ertugrul

Hi Ian,
Superb daily life capture. It shows what it was like in Port Moresby forty years ago perfectly. So strange by today's standards to see the woman with the cigarette in her mouth. Interesting that they are wearing floral print dresses but no shoes.
Well done, thanks for the effort.
Regards
Peter
