We managed to time it right to see some of the world's rarest penguins, the Yellow-eyed Penguin, come ashore to their nesting area. It is estimated that there are only 1600 breeding pairs (Thanks Wikipedia) still in the wild.
Once out of the water they stopped to preen themselves before heading into long grass and their nests.
In the WS is a wider view. As often happened along The Catlins coast we had the area to ourselves which is probably good for the penguins.

Two beautiful photos that I would have liked to take. We see a yellow eye better in the WS, but both photos show that it could also have been known as the Pink-footed Penguin.

Hello Ian, I had never heard of the yellow eyed penguin before, so that makes these shots even more interesting. Both shots are excellent, the sharpness allows us to see all the details so clearly.
And, look at those pink feet, so pink!

I guess you are right. These rare birds are relatively safe thanks to the fact that this region is so far away from everything. Lovely and sharp closeup of this penguin.

Hello Ian,
I cannot see the yellow eye in your main photo but the penguin's feet are so striking pink.
The nails also seem very sharp to me, so I'd rather not get a claw from this cute animal.

Too hot for penguins in Qld but I have seen them at Phillip Island in Victoria. Good use of selective focus and a soft, diffused light. Tfs!

Hi Ian,
I am glad to see you back on TE. I guess you came back from a new trip and will share new photos soon.
This is a very charming wildlife capture. I have almost seen penguins, I went to Tierra del Fuego but had only one day there and I have chosen mistakenly wrong tours. Only one tour was taking people to the penguins colony.
This species which you show maybe has yellow eyes but my attention was attracted to the pink socks. Ha ha
