Heading south from Thredbo is Alpine Way that takes you to lower parts of Kosciuszko National Park near the Murray River and on to the neighbouring state of Victoria.
The road goes through Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans) forests which grow just below the Snow Gums. Unfortunately much of that forest has suffered 2 major fires this century - 2003 and early this year. As with Snow Gums they don't recover from fires and shed their seed for the forest to regenerate. These trees (not a very scenic photo!) were ones that started growing after the 2003 fires and have been burnt out early this year before they reach maturity.
Who knows how long it will take for the forest to fully recover.
In the workshop is another photo of burnt Mountain Ash trees that were also burnt twice although the tallest one survived the 2003 fire. You'll notice that the tops of the tallest trees have again escaped the fire.
