By river the small town of Brewarrina is over 2,000 km from the sea. Paddle steamers used to sail all the way to Brewarrina and beyond to pick up bails of wool. This lift bridge over the Barwon River opened in 1896. It took 2 men to wind it up the centre part to allow the paddle steamers to pass. Apart from the lift section the strudture is all timber.
In the local museum there are photos in flood time of water nearly up to the road way. It has now been replaced by a modern concrete bridge that doesn't need to open as the river boats have long gone from this part of the river. The arrival of the railway meant the end for the river boats but the railway to Brewarrina has also long since closed. Wool, cotton and meat all go by road these days.

J’imagine ces bateaux ΰ aubes se mouvoir sur les eaux du fleuve, attendre que le pont puisse s'ιlever pour avoir le droit de passage. Je remarque que nos anciens avaient bien du talent pour penser, ιdifier, rιaliser un tel pont.

This is a fantastic bridge. It's elegantly designed and ingeniously constructed in a combination of traditional and modern techniques. I suppose it is now protected as a cultural heritage. It's a good photo from a good angle with nicely framing trees on both sides.

Hello Ian,
This is a bridge quite unlike any that I have ever seen before! It is one which was the perfect solution to the problems of the time.
The mixture of natural and manmade materials, has created a bridge that looks robust, with a plethora of different geometric shapes. It brings to mind 'Transformers'!
The reflections give it surprising depth.

Excellent viewpoint, which reveals the structure of this lift bridge very well. Its silvery tones make a nice contrast with the green and yellowish colours of nature, too. I also like the reflections in the calm water.
