Photographer's Note
This is a Bluebottle, also known as a Portuguese Man O' War. Its tail carries a sting, which although is painful, is not normally dangerous to humans. I've been stung by a Bluebottle hundreds of times, it's almost like a rite of passage here in Australia and is the reason you will see bottles of vinegar at most surf beaches, which are used to treat people who have been stung. Bluebottles are blown onto the coast when there are on-shore winds. Here in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland which are situated on the east coast, you need to watch out for easterly winds). Bluebottles are in fact not one animal, they are actually a colony of 4 different species, zooids, which live together. They vary in size, from about 1 centimetre to about 10 centimetres.
Living on the coast, we are taught from a very young age, that any animal in the sea which is coloured blue, is toxic and not to touch it. The best example of this is the beautiful but lethal Blue Ringed Octopus, which you can see in my Workshop. There is no known anti-venom and if it stings you, you'll die within minutes.

Hello Dear Lisa,
The variation in blue must indicative of the concentration of the creature's venom, but the Portuguese Men O' War one sees around the Coast of Florida is a far more dangerous variety. I remember many years ago a non-so-bright young man with a rowboat paddle smacking jellyfish on a beach. He was splashed by the fluid, sending him to a hospital. The creature in the ws photo is especially scary like the Australian sea snake.
Warm regards, Lisa,
Bulent

Ciao cara Lisa,
Oh, you bring back hilarious memories of reading Bill Bryson's 'Down Under', where he describes any number of poisonous creatures, intent on spoiling life for the unsuspecting tourist!
We usually think of red being the colour for danger but, on reflection, poison was always kept in a blue bottle!
It looks like an ink-stained jelly!
What a curious creature it is and indicative of the quirks of nature!
A well composed photograph of this strange animal, with a most interesting note.
Thank you for sharing,
Bev :-)

Hello Lisa,
A opened a long time ago on TE a theme called Lost Blue Objects. This picture suits very well in that theme.
Maybe a jellyfish isn’t an object, but the name bluebottle suggests it is and in the sand on the beach the creature is certainly lost.
I like this minimal approach in this composition.

Hi Lisa
Thanks to your in depth useful infor, really small but gorgeous creature showing off its true colour...
Well it says a lot about your skills too to achieve a closer under water shot, excellent detail and focusing with stunning contrast making it hard to miss. I'm glad it's not that big for real! but I think it's worth the sting Lisa ... he he.. for the pleasure that it brings, plus all the photographic opportunities presented. That is a simple stunning shot - well done!
Best wishes

Ciao Lisuccia
Carlo

Hello dear Lisa,
both creatures are fascinating and lovely, but I wouldn't like to have a close encounter with them. Your pictures are superb. I've never been stung by any kind of jellyfish and hope to keep my record for as long as possible:) I like very much the quality of the colours and textures, the way you are prtraying the plasticity, transparency and eeriness of the Bluebottle. The patterned backdrop and the filtred light are very agreeable and eerie too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,
Ourania

Hi Lisa.
Thanks for this very interesting piece of information, as well as the photo! I've never encountered either of these weird creatures, but then I haven't been in the surf for many years. I like the composition here, but the WS photo actually looks more stunning.
Regards,
Andrew

Ciao cara Lisa,
What a queer looking creature - but I guess this fellow looking at us probably thinks the very same thing. As Bulent says, this does not look quite like pictures of the Portuguese Man O' War that I have seen, but it's a beautiful colour even if it does give nasty stings. Your workshop photograph is beautiful too but if the Blue Ringed Octopus is indeed as deadly as you say, I certainly hope that you photographed this one in a tank or a zoo and not when you were swimming in the sea!
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.
