Photographer's Note
This is a shot of the Crawley Edge Boatshed, found on Matilda Bay in Perth, Western Australia. I had seen this boathouse in others' portfolios, and wanted to get a shot of this for myself. To me, this was a landmark I had to capture before I left Australia.
My wife and I made the trip out to Perth last June. I was fortunate enough to link up with Jeff Tupper (westozman) who offered to show me the sights (including this boathouse and the Darter on it) and joined me for a day of shooting.
Given the right light I think this would be a great capture, and invite others to give it a shot. Given a grey Australian winter day as we had, this is what you get. Still, I was fairly happy with the shot, not just for the image, but also for what was involved in getting it.
The shot was taken with a Tokina 12-24mm lens. I don't own one of these (yet), it was loaned to me by Jeff, to “try out”. On top of that, Jeff went above and beyond in helping me to get this capture. He saw me waiting for a piece of garbage floating on the Swan River, to get out of the way. In the shot just prior to this one you can see how he took care of the garbage, and I think got a soaker in the process.
This to me is what TE should be all about. We were two individuals from opposite ends of the world, coming together for a day of photography, learning and helping each other in the process. This was one of the shots gained in that exercise.
Incidentally, for those that are curious, my wife and I did take a ride down the Swan the next day so we got a look at the back and inside of the boathouse.
Workflow:
I follow a generic workflow now as outlined in my Bio.
Conditions for the shot were overcast.
Shot taken at 20mm, ISO 250, f/11, 1/125 sec
Thanks for dropping by.

Hello John?!
reading the note the way you describe the process and the story behind the image... It is you. Welcome back. It's been a long while. I hope all is fine with you. So, going back to Canana eh? What an expericence to live in Australia for awhile. Good for you.
As for this shot, you're right the light was not ideal, but as you said, the story behind the image is worth the memories especially for you personally. I think overall it is a very successful shot, despite the low light, good enought details, the texture of the rocks is nice and clear, the color of the tree can be a bit brighter if you have good light, composition is just perfect with plenty of natural element foreground leading to the blue boat house. Thanks John and hope to see you back and active again here. We have lost a few good photographers since the change.

Hello John,
So nice to see you back on TE. I presume you are now back in Canada enjoying the summer while Australia is having its share of winter. Like you, I enjoy meeting fellow photographers from different parts of the world. I believe you had a good day out with Jeff.
As a visitor, we can't be always lucky to get the best light for photo, but we can make the best out of it. I am convinced you have done that well. The contrasting blue boatshed is well placed and there is sufficient FG details to create interest.
Cheers and Greetings from Melbourne

Hi John,
The diagonal line of the per is an asset to the composition. The trees in the background and the edge of the shore are framimg well the scene. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the boatshed. The good management of the light which is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

G'day John,
I was wondering if any shots from that bleak day would make your gallery! The best time for this location is 1st light on a summer's day - I should've woken you earlier! Next time, eh? One thing I'll be eternally grateful to you for is getting me onto my D200 - just a great piece of kit. And now you'll probably convince me to go to the D300, too! You made the best you could out of this shot, thanks for the memories.
Best wishes,
Jeff

Hello John, A nice image where everything seems in the correct place even if the light was not ideal. I like the composition with the boatshed in a good spot in the frame with the rocks & water FG creating interest & depth. Certainly worth posting not only for it's own value but also to compliment your well written note, have enjoyed both, thanks.
Cheers

Bonjour John
Le bleu de cette cabane ou maison se fond avec les ιlιments naturels que sont l'eau et le ciel et ce bleu foncι donne le bon contraste.Bon cadrage de la composition.
