Photographer's Note
When Malgo visited Australia, she commented that camping out in a swag under the stars, was one of the highlights of her trip. I agree. There's nothing quite like sleeping out under these vast, ancient skies. Forget 5 star hotels, this is a one million star hotel.
This is the Southern Cross at a 4 hour exposure taken from the Ayers Rock Camping Ground.

Ciao Lisa,
Fascinating view, I just wonder how you spent your time during the four hour exposure; a couple bottles of wine no doubt came in handy:-) The colours are superb and the composition well judged.

Ciao carissima Lisa,
What a superbly executed shot! In some ways I have to admire your dedication and patience in achieving such a magnificent representation of the Heavens but, then, I suppose you could have gone away and done something else while your four-hour exposure took place - unlike myself who sat for five hours outside in Scotland last month with my camera taking about 160 shots of the lunar eclipse!
But setting up your camera and managing to point it in the right direction must have been an achievement in itself, not to mention trying to decide what to dial in for exposure settings - aperture, ISO and so on - and managing to get the camera lens focused at infinity too - that can be very difficult with modern lenses which do not "stop" at infinity, if you know what I mean. I'd love to hear exactly how you did it all as I suspect you got it right first time - not a lot of opportunity for multiple exposures in this game.
Your composition is perfect, the distant exposure is perfect and you've got just enough light on the foreground trees too.
Absolutely Wonderful!
Kindest Regards,
John.

Ciao Lisa,
Although I stayed at the cabins at Uluru I did sleep out in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, and the air quality and clarity are just as amazing allowing a spectacular view of the stars without any of the light pollution of Sydney Melbourne or Brisbane. It's an incredible sight for sure. I did notice the skies at Uluru when I went outside away from the cabins. Taking care not to tread on any snakes in the dark! Tfs. The light trails here of the stars are a genre I've never attempted. Tfs.

Ciao Lisa,
Grazie, thanks!! What a splendid gift for me.
Of course, Southern Cross is the thing that you can't see in real in Northern Hemisphere, so I was always very excited about it. In my first trip, to Peru, I haven't seen it. I asked many people but no one could tell me where it could be and how big it is. Strange, because every child in Poland knows Ursa Maior (called the Big Cart) and Polar Star. I saw it for the first time in Easter Island, at five in the morning. Then in Namibia, I stayed always in camp sites, in tent, there were no lights on the desert, but the sky was not so impressive. Maybe we stayed in the same camping site in ayers Rock? Btw, I worked as a astronomy teacher in high school for half a year, hahaha.
Fantastic picture, wow, 4 hours exposure, with a tripod abd cable release, of course. . I know the stars photos by Didier, they are gorgeous.
Thanks once more, big hugs

Hi Lisa,
An amazing shot. I have not tried something like this - not sure about camping out in the dark, I guess. I would certainly love to be able to shoot something like this !

Ciao Lisa,
$ hours.... that is a very long time. Almost enough to take a little nap. But what a nice result. The technic was perfect. When we move the picture up and down we see the movement of the stars.
Have a great day

Hello Lisa,
I'm always impressed by long exposure star photos. It's fascinating to actually see the rotating movement through a photo like this. The blue color of the sky is beautiful, and the white, swirling patterns are mesmerizing.

Ciao Cara Lisa,
I had no idea what your photograph was, from the thumbnail.
Maybe that was what attracted me to open it ... well, and your photographs usually have something to say!
I was blown away with this!
It gives the idea of spinning in space.
I really wonder how you worked out the settings on your camera to get something so well defined. Was it trial and error?
I can imagine what an amazing experience it is, to sleep under the stars! If ever something is uplifting, that must be one of them!
Thank you for sharing this,
Bev :-)

Hi Lisa,
Extremely long exposure creates surrealistic atmosphere. Strong colours and contrasts. Stars making circles while the earth turns. Fascinating.

Hi Lisa
An impressive long exposure capture & great technique portraying the stunning effect of the circular startrail for 4 hours reflecting the rotation of our planet! Lucky, you must have exceptionally clear skies there. The trees as great reference point on the foreground make the colour of the night easily pop out with a good colour balance and sharpness throughout. Hard work pays off handsomely indeed! An appealing shot & a visual stunner. My congrats.
Best wishes
