Photographer's Note

This isn’t just a picture of a winning horse and rider. There’s a story that goes with this one.

The Cox Plate is a horse race run annually in Melbourne at the Mooney Valley Racing Club. It’s the second highest paying race in Australia, after the Melbourne Cup. Horse racing in Australia seems to be a very big thing. The winning horse this year was “Fields of Omagh”. The jockey was Craig Williams (in blue and gold).

This horse has won here before but was not expected to win and started off from the gate second from last. It held this position, against the rail, for most of the race. The race is 2040 metres long. At the appropriate time, Craig Williams guided his horse to the outside and around the crowd until he was up next to the leader. At the wire he beat the leader out by a nose. The race showed a certain brilliance on the part of the jockey and very strong determination on the part of the horse. What is really remarkable about all of this is that the horse is nine years old. It was to be it’s last race. This was a fairy tale type of race which we just don’t see very often.

The photograph you see here was taken about ½ second after crossing the finish line. The smile you see on the jockey’s face says it all. He knew what he had done.

Post processing included a crop for the sign, a slight adjustment for shadows and levels, minor cloning to remove a tripod leg in the flowers, and very light use of the unsharp mask.
