Lucinda, 100 miles north of Townsville, is in the middle of sugar cane country. The Lucinda bulk sugar terminal has the distinction of having the world’s longest service jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. At 5.76 kilometers in length and supported by more than 660 concrete and steel pylons, its length actually follows the curved contour of the earth, dipping 1.2 metres over its length. You can barely see the sugar loader out at the end on the right.

Its main purpose is to deliver sugar to Panamax class vessels (ships). It takes 22 minutes for sugar to travel along the conveyor supported by this jetty, from the on-shore storage sheds to the ship loader.

In 2005, the port handled 20 ships with sugar exports of 676,636 tonnes. That’s a lot of little packets.

It has a side benefit as well. It is also known as the 5.7 Kilometer Fish Attracting Device. The 660 concrete and steel pylons form a great habitat for baitfish and predators. To fish it you can hire a guide and boat, or adjacent to this structure is a small service jetty which is popular with many of the local anglers. Anglers have used this to catch Spanish Mackerel, Giant Trevally, Queenfish, Northern Bluefin Tuna and even Small Black Marlin.

Much of this from: http://www.pcq.com.au/lucinda.cfm and http://www.queenslandholidays.com.au/things-to-see-and-do/lucinda-jetty/index.cfm and http://www.crackfish.com/jetty.htm .

Workflow was as follow:
Shot taken in Raw - NEF files adjusted for exposure and shadow only (maximums)
Rotated with alignment on horizon – cropped
Selective noise reduction in sky
Adjusted levels to white and black points
Adjusted curves
Added an overlay layer and dodged and burned with 10% opacity black and white brush
Added saturation layer +15 to master
Added a layer for sharpening with USM
Modified sharpening with a layer mask (25% opacity black brush)
Saved as a tiff
For this post, resized, sharpened edges on original USM layer, framed and saved as a jpeg
