Photographer's Note
Every year, the local council organises Sculptures By The Sea, where a number of artworks are installed along the famous Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walkway. The exhibition runs every year - and has done for the last 60 years.
This particular sculpture is called "Ship of Fools" by Deborah Halpern, and was exhibited in 2012. Deborah is from Victoria and specialises in ceramics and mosaics (my favourite type of medium). Personally, I think this Ship of Fools should be copied and erected outside every government house in the Western World, to let the politicians know what a mess they're all making of our lives. I'm such a cynic!

Cara Lisa
Ciao e buona giornata

Ciao Lisa
There is no lack of colors in these sculptures by the sea. We can almost use the term : kaleidoscope of color. We can also say that they have their eye on us.
Very well done

Ciao Lisa,
Why only the Western World? Politicians are the same the world over, a complete waste of space in my opinion! Love this colourful capture - superb saturated colours and excellent colours.

Dia duit Lisa,
I really enjoyed your previous posts from this event, I think its a fantastic idea to have art like this erected in such a place. Especially the colours, this is an amazingly bright and surreal piece.
I can just imagine some poor soul on the way back from a drunken beach party and encountering this and starting to question reality. For strange multi colored oddities, they have very infectious smiles!
All the best

Hello Lisa - Love your note on this one and love the brilliantly hued sculpture which you have presented to fine effect. I wonder why the artist named the piece as she did? The title immediately gets my internal voice singing the old Doors song. Super shot! Warm regards Rosemary

I love this one, Lisa.
Picture convey a feel of art within wild nature, and the colors rendered makes a superb contrast.
Fine taken from POV chosen, an askewed angel rather than upfront view.
Cheers,
Ike

Hello Lisa,
I think some politicians are not really worthy of such a fine gift. And who would pay for them? Probaby the ordinary taxpayers, as usual.
But these sculptures look great and the artist seems to have used just about every colour available. They actually make me think of Easter Island, just very different. The whole show sounds lke a great idea.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Lisa,
I love every kind of art that makes the public space more lively and interesting for us.These sculptures look really amazing(I don΄t know, but they remind me somehow the sculptures from Easter Island presented lately by Craig). Also their color schem couldn΄t be more picturesque.Beautiful works of art and excellent presentation of them.
One more thing-I agree with every single word from your note about politicians!
Wish You all the best

Hi Lisa
I have to say that i was totally surprised and caught off guard when i viewed these here in the large format...in the smaller format the vibrant colors don't really translate over aswell.
HERE, it hit me like a tone of bricks! Wham!
gotta love these colors, and the subject.
but i'll leave now because they are kinda freaking me out!! lol
have a great day

Ciao Lisuccia
Saluti
Carlo

Howdy Lisa,
I recollect the famous Ship of Fools flick from decades ago, and even though it was about tourists, I can understand the connection to politicians.
These three mosaics are magnificient and also make be envious because my mosaics are not as refined and not as colorful. I use stones, seashells, tumbled glass and make hardscapes. My yard is becoming a mixture of mosaics and plants, with no grass lawn in sight.
And obviously Bondi Beach has more attractions than surfing.
Cheers,
Ray

oh my, oh my, oh my ~
my head is about to explode with delight at these colors. and those eyes!
if picasso had done mosaics...
interestingly, the art looks so clear and sharp against the nature behind it, which almost looks blue-screened -- but between the two, they make for a very interesting contrast.
and yes i agree with your comment -- beginning with my home state of north carolina, especially now, this ship of fools should be copied and erected outside every government house. if only!!
all best ~

Ciao cara Lisa,
sadly our politicians are not as colourful, interesting or attractive. This work of art is fascinating, the colours and details are superb and ensure that the viewer's interest doesn't fade away quickly. Your picture has great depth and the soft lighting helps the shapes and details stand out without any compromise in definition. The natural backdrop is a constant surprise against the graphism of the foreground. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,
Ourania

Hello Lisa
Your are no cynic at all, but a simple realist. Not only the Gouvernements of the West have made a mess, they all have.
These statues are quite intriguing, the longer I look at them, the more details I discover, especially in the one to the right. Set with their natural backdrop they must be quite a sight.
have a good weekend

Ciao cara Lisa,
I well remember your previous photographs of the "Ship of Fools" and this one, I think, is definitely more striking than those. The colours are more vibrant and the brightly coloured heads stand out more prominently against a finely out of focus and much duller background.
Gorgeous light and colours, fine strong composition and exquisite details and sharpness.
And a fascinating note to boot - and a political opinion with which I have great empathy!
Fabulous!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Lisa,
A nice view on these scupltures with fantastic colours. It would have been great to have something on the picture to give the scale of these sculptures, but this not always easy to find one !
Thanks for sharing,

Hi Lisa,
Ship of Fools there are a few versions such as
1.)
Ship of Fools (Modern German: Das Narrenschiff, Latin: Stultifera Navis, original medieval German title: Daί Narrenschyff ad Narragoniam) is a book of satire published in 1494 in Basel, Switzerland, by Sebastian Brant, a conservative German theologian.
In a prologue, 112 brief satires, and an epilogue, all illustrated with woodcuts, the book is notable for including the first commissioned work by the great Renaissance artist-engraver Albrecht Dόrer. Much of the work was critical of the current state of the Church. Brant here lashes with unsparing vigour the weaknesses and vices of his time. Here he conceives Saint Grobian, whom he imagines to be the patron saint of vulgar and coarse people.
The Ship of Fools was inspired by a frequent motif in medieval art and Literature, and particularly in religious satire, due to a pun on the Latin word "navis", which means a boat and also the nave of a church.
Your Pic is perfect!
Wolfgang

Is this Easter Island on acid? Or, even, Picasso's interpretation of such? Lots to see in this wonderfully detailed shot of an interesting sculpture...amazingly vivid colors are brought out beautifully here. Thanks!

Hi Lisa!
It seems a very interesting event and you chose a very nice work for a shot. I believe it must be great to see them displayed in this place. Very good focus to show the details of the sculpture. The trees and rocks are a good background.

Hi Lisa,
You have brought out the colour and design in these sculptures very well. The saturation and exposure are just right for a striking photo. Nice juxtaposition of the colourful and smooth sculptures and the rough natural rocks and plants behind them.
