Photographer's Note
We had an opportunity to travel to Port Stephens (Shoal Bay)in April. This is a great place to just wander around and take photographs.
I followed these guys around for about a half an hour waiting for the perfect pose, and they stuck pretty close together, so even before I took their picture I was calling them "The Three Amigos".
They are Australian Pelicans. You see them very often along the shore waiting for scraps from fishermen, or you might see them flying. They are a lot more graceful then they would appear from standing on the ground. When they are standing they are quite tall, about the size of a small child; much larger than the ones I am used to from the Southern US.
This photograph was scanned from a 35 mm slide, I did some adjustment for shadows and highlights, adjusted the levels a bit and finally cropped it to an 8 x 10 format. It just looked better that way to me.

Hello John,
This is an excellent photo. The pose of the "Amigos" that you captured is terrific - almost like three ballerinas in a "pas de trois" (if there is such a thing in ballet). I have been trying for a year to get a good shot of pelicans, and I am extremely jealous of your success. It is a wonderful shot - very well done!
Regards, Jackie
P.S. Welcome to TE!! I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Great capture, John. You made the photo just at the right moment, with one of the pelicans facing the opposite side. Good, natural color also,
Mike

Hello amigo John, a pretty and pleasant image with much light and good colors in spite of it to have removed from a slide, but what I like more is the pose of the "tres amigos", is an enchantment.
Congratulations and a greeting from Spain.

Hello John,
I photgraphed some of these wonderful characters in the water at Caloundra on Queensland's Sunshine Coast just last weeks. They are the most graceful fliers also, sometimes forming a flying squadren of many birds. Excellent sand/water ratio and clear focus on the birds. Nice positions also, as these guys are not always so co-operative in stature often sitting totally or turning away. A nice moment.

the waiting for almost 30 minutes or so to capture such grouping of these alcatraces paid the effort, amigo John!
an excellent scanned upload devoid of the grainy stuff that scans give.

Hi John. Good photo of these large birds at Port Stephens, one of the best places in NSW! Good composition with the three beaks all forming a strong vertical component. TFS. Murray.

Hi John,
Beautiful capture of these large birds that appear to be posing for your camera. Lovely strong colors especially the the long ping beaks and of course the perfect blue ocean backdrop.

Hello John,
I like the way they seem to interact in their postures!
Two alike and one opposite, that is great and the situation is well captured...
Pleasant composition, good details!

Good title John, and perfect composition with the three amigos all looking straight at you. Color and sharpness, in my opinion, could be better. But, the photo really doesn't rely on them as much as the composition. It's a great subject and perfect timing.
Nice work.

Hi John,
A good capture of the three pelicans with the sea in the background, the details and colors of the birds are clear and precise. The subject is well framed. The light brings out the colors. Have a nice day.
