Photographer's Note

ENGLISH: This is the Australian War Memorial in our capital city, Canberra. It was built in 1941, designed by Emil Sodersten and John Crust in the late 1920s. Along the walls are the names of all the Australian soldiers who gave their lives for their country throughout the many wars over the years. It's a very sobering thought that one day, there will not be enough walls for those names.

PS: I've just looked at my upload in horror to find out that I uploaded the un-adjusted image. I had corrected the distortion in the one I should have uploaded. Apologies.

PPS: Just for Ike, I have included the colour version in my Workshop.

Beautiful black and white render, the perspective is top notch, not too hard with the contrasts either, reflection is icing on the cake. just perfect as the people show scale of this architecture.

Hi Lisa - most unusual seeing the War Memorial almost empty. A good clear and sharp photo with great B&W contrast.
If you've time on your way back from Canberra call in at beautiful down town Mittagong for a coffee.

Hi Lisa - Perfect in B&W and what a well composed shot. The diminishing perspective is very good with so many architectural lines leading the eye towards the dome. Actually, I thought the architecture with arches, dome and pool looked middle eastern so was quite surprised to see it is a war memorial in Canberra. Very well managed range of tones, I really need to try B&W a bit more as in this type of shot it underlines the architectural detail and one doesn't get distracted by colour. Very elegant work. Good Morning Lisa,

I was surprised to find that this was a shot from Australia; my first impression was of the Middle East.
Your pov is very compelling with many converging lines, both real and reflected, drawing the eyes towards the dome. Excellent sense of perspective.
Your use of b&w is sensitive and, with your notes does make one think beyond the photograph.

molto bello questo Memorial.
Ho immaginato subito che si trattasse di un Memorial dalla sua particolare architettura, sebbene un pς diverso da quello che ho visto a Sydney.
Ho visto che Camberra non θ molto lontano da Sydney.
Chissΰ, forse un giorno ci andrς.

Molto bello il POV, nonchθ l'ottimo trattamento in bianco e nero.
Bellissimo il riflesso sull'acqua.

Spero avrai altre immagini di Canberra da proporci, anche a colori.

if this is distorted then it is barely noticable and does not detract from the impact of this really classy shot. Love the symmetry and irresistable perspective. It is an awesome looking place and has an almost extra-terrestrial atmosphere about it, which in some respects befits it as a memorial to the glorious dead. Stunning image and very effective in B&W.

To tell you the truth, Lisa, as I always do: this time I'd like to see how this place looks in colors.
It's an impressive edifice, clear and neat outlines, mighty dome and archs on the sides.
POV and depth were super.

I first thought it was a temple in India or something like that ! Excellent POV with great perspective lines that add depth to the composition. I love the reflections in the basin too. Very good B&W conversion.

this shot brings back memories of our Canberra visit,it was a most moving experience seeing all those poppies.
The mono treatment works well here accentuating the perspective and the symmetry.
The composition is lovely and the light sky has retained some interesting cloud.Nice one.

A combination impressive architecture - Roman and what we Californian's call "Art Deco", with your excellent monochrome vision; especially the mirror of the dominate structure with parallel arches.

A worthy memorial and ironically completed on the start of another World War disaster.

Ciao Lisa,

Now, I thought I'd seen a picture of this place not that very long ago and, sure enough, I found this one uploaded by a favourite photographer of mine.

Interestingly enough, you point out that you uploaded the wrong picture as this one has not had its distortion corrected. I'm trying to imagine what this one would look like were the distortion to be corrected but I keep looking further at this picture and my feeling is that the distortion actually gives it more drama and impact - a bit like entasis, perhaps, which, as we know, has made structures appear grander and more imposing from the Pyramids, Greek and Roman columns to the Cenotaph in Whitehall and even Rolls-Royce radiator cowls.

The lighting too is superb and adds to the grandeur as also does the strong perspective. Wonderful contrasts and tones and exquisite sharpness. A very thought provoking note too.

Beautiful image of this war memorial with no one except you I guess.The black and white suits well here. Perfect symmetry with clear reflection. To be honest with you, I haven't noticed any distortion. Lisa, pardon my ignorance, what are those white dots in the water? Lovely architecture .

I recognised your War Memorial pics straight away,as both Les and myself have almost the same ourselves.The architecture and the beds of plain white flowers ( back then a few years ago) were very fitting, and tastefully done.
A very moving and sobering place.

great photo, it caught my attention immediately when scanning your gallery.
these types of scenes with the long perspective lines are some of my favorites. but is the photo straight? or is it just that my eyes are crooked? the only thing I hate about these shots are trying to correct the horizon line and get the architectural lines all flowing - often they dont line up - but thats just my stupid ocd acting up again as its only tilting downward to the right a tad.
believe me, i love the scene, and the bw conversion.

As for coming to your homeland for Nursing jobs, Tosca and I are still searching about it, and thinking about it. Actually, alot of it depends on Scooby! lol
he's an older dog, taking him on the plane would kill the old guy. So we'd have to wait at least a couple years lol. We'll see how it goes!

la tua foto `e bellissima, con affascinante perspettiva e profondit`a, ottima illuminazione, nitidezza e chiarezza, stupende tonalit`a e atmosfera dolce-amara e suggestiva. Il riflesso nitidissimo aggiunge al effetto di profondit`a ed al fascino delle linee convergenti. La presenza di alcune persone al centro dell' attenzione, in fondo nero, vivifica la composizione ed i pensieri. La foto accattiva a lungo, la tua nota lo stesso. Mi stupivo sempre pensando alla partecipazione dei soldati Australiani, Neozelandesi, Indiani in guerre lontanissime, in terre sconosciute. Hanno sicuramente guadagnato il rispetto di tutti, sopratutto quelli che li hanno conosciuti nella loro terra come amici o nemici. Penso che si siano trovati anche a Lero, l' isola di Dodecaneso dove abito. La Battaglia di Lero fu molto importante nella seconda guerra mondiale. Ci furono anche Indiani che i piu anziani ricordano ancora e che avevano trasformato un' aula della scuola elementare in tempio. Cosi lontani dalla loro patria e le loro famiglie...

I find the monochrome version better as the exposition on both side of the walls looks quite balanced and it highlights the lines and patterns in the frame. The reflection is a nice element too and the POV and perspective is well chosen. Great exposition btw, balanced, clear, sharp and clean!

I've flown over Canberra many times enroute from Sydney to Melbourne & Brisbane and seen it from the air, but have never been there. I must try & get there one day. Its worth 2-3 days from what I hear. Good sharpness and incredible diminishing linear perspective & vanishing point. A classic textbook case! Nice tonal range, sharpness, graphism & reflections. Tfs!

Molti morti tra questi coraggiosi soldati.
Anche a Cagliari nel cimitero militare monumentale vi sono croci per Australiani soldati, marinai e , purtroppo molti RAAF.
