Photographer's Note
Location: This is just west of the Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, Utah. Ten minutes before sunset.
Self critique: I have hesitated in uploading this picture for a long time because, although I liked this photo, something just didn't feel right about it. As I was looking at it again today I suddenly realized what was wrong. Now that I have figured it out, I feel comfortable in uploading it. Oh, did you think I was going to tell you what's wrong with it? Nope, but I'm sure you can find your own problems with this photo.

I've just entered in TE and I saw your photo. So, I sad: this a good photo. You work very well. Good POV and good composition.

Ryan - this photo is compositionally interesting - with the lines and patterns. The subjects are in the off centred part of the frame, the horizon (pretty) straight and the lighting is interesting.
I think youre being quite critical indeed, the only thing I can think of is that we dont know what they're looking at - but thats not necessarily the point of the photo.

Hi Ryan;
Appologies for not stopping by in awhile... I was away on business for a couple weeks- then on vacation for a couple weeks. Needless to say- I have some catching up to do on TE! Hahaha
This shot actually reminds me a lot of my current posting. The subject being the people in the perfect location (an intersection if you're familiar with the rule of thirds), and the the tracks leading the eye into the frame. (My shot following the same concepts- also in B&W)!
Excellent tonal levels with just the right amount of shadows. I like how the background mountains silhouette in contrast to the flats and the sky.
Nice one!
- Dan
P.S.- I cannot find the flaw...

Hi Ryan!
Very nice lights and a the black and white is a good choose to this picture, enhancing its nice contrast and details, specially on the ground. Something like a space shot, indeed!
Well taken!

Hi Ryan,
It took me a while but now I'm back from space. The foot prints lead you into the people. The shadow takes you back down into the tracks that lead you over the people into the horizon. If one of them were standing the eye would stop right there and would possibly follow the shadow to the tracks again and meet the body but never dissappear into the horizon. After reading Peter's critique it got me thinking too.
I've never been to the Bonneville Salt Flats. Anything wild out there worth shooting?
TFS, -Steve S.

Hi Ryan,
I like your way of self critique. Its unique in many ways. You sensistise the mind and provide another POV.
Its another form of riddle, in which you ask others.
Well I like the body language of the subjects, the way they seem to study the marks...as if they had forgoten the way back to home...and learning from them, trying to figure out something.
You can make as many stories from this shot.
For Example, the pair is lost on Planet WWW, and something has fallen from the space and the scientists are studying it.
A thought provoking shot, thought the odd footmarkfacing us prevented you to upload, it does tell many such stories.
Keep it up.

Hi Ryan,
Hmmm... You make me curious there! I can't see anything wrong with it! Oh, a hug and a kiss if I find what's wrong... Well, it's not in the picture itself, nothing technically that's wrong. As Peter's comment, the isolation in the lower part is not at all a problem.
So I go for the terms of service hahaha. Rule 5: "Photographs of family, friends, or pets (not only one's own) are highly discouraged and may be removed with notice."
Are the two guys friends of yours, or family?! ;-)
Nice photograph!

Bonjour,

Hello Ryan,
This is a superb composition and I like very much the processing you applied. It enhances well the shadows due to this beautiful light...
But you make me very curious with your note ! Where is the fault ? The only critique I can tell, for my side, would be that I wouldn't have cut the right track, but can't consider it that major...
Hope you will give us the solution ;-)
Have a nice day.

Hi Ryan,
What to say, i like the image, although i know you are looking different to it. It's your shot, you created him and knew how the situation was when making this one. Converting him to b&w and your started to doubt. The light in the lefthand corner at the top, that harsh sunlight is relly extrme. But i don't have any problems with it...you? ;-)
The long shadow from the two people, a straight line, looks weird, but the whole landscape looks weird, out of this world, an unique location, so also that is not bothering me. But you have probalbt other so called flaws you don't like ;-)
The overal impression is very good my friend, really not bad at all..!!!!
Your b&w conversion is top..

I still can't figure out what you thought was wrong, even after reading Peter's critique. Did you want to have one of the guys standing across the horizon? Man, that wouldn't work, would it? Anyway, I love the scene just the way it is. The composition is good and the elements are well placed. Probably I would have corrected those highlights in the top left, but in this b&w it doesn't bug me at all. The way the curved tracks are crossed by the shadows for a giant stylized "A". Beautiful.

hello Ryan,
it's an interesting composition, good POV, excellent framing, the POV a little bit lower was an option too by making a link with the horizon and the man on the left, i like the title ;)

Boy, are you critical with your own shots. Some self critique is pretty good and helps to improve and get better over time but honestly I don't see what you can ameliorate here. I cheated somewhat I found out what your alleged weakness is supposed to be and I don't agree with you at all. It might be some personal taste, but I like both person bending over the tracks. Bracking through the horizon is not an option for me at all. The isolation in the lower part should be fully intentional.

Well, the flaw must be subtle; I figured I would only find it by comparing yours to the best, to magazine-cover-quality photography. And a comparison to America's magazine covers reveals what must be the flaw in this shot: it doesn't have Paris Hilton in it.
Despite that now-clear lack, it's a great shot. The low light angle brings out every grain of foreground texture and makes for a wonderful combination of lines and curves, from the inverted L of your friend's (oops, I mean that stranger's) body to the way the shadows cross the tire tracks.

It tells a story and leaves us wondering what they are looking at. I like this composition. The tire tracks make a nice frame for the people who are well placed using the rule of thirds. The footprints indicate that they have been looking for something.

Hello Ryan! It looks like "my" film crew I was talking about and I remember that you downloaded some parts of the Bonneville 400 stuff (I have actually to ask how they do, at least I have never seen it in the movies so far). But maybe these people on your photo were just checking the environment after all the races on the salt lakes :) Personally I love this photo and it does remind me of the film. And this is a compliment as Hannes Schmid is a very famous photographer and there are many stars that hire him ... see, it is that good. Take care, Barbara.

Wonderful shot! The two people have an interesting pose (the man is bent over like a number 7 in reverse) and a nice shadow slashing across the frame. The curving tracks of the tires are perfectly positioned to go around the people and balance the photo. What's the problem? I know - it's too perfect!

Hi Ryan,
Your challenge evoked some great critiques, I enjoyed them almost as much as the picture. Often the critiques define for me what I like about a picture when I can't explain for myself. For me, the explantion came with: Alvin's, "a nice shadow slashing across the frame. The curving tracks of the tires are perfectly positioned to go around the people and balance the photo," Peter's, "I like both person bending over the tracks. Bracking through the horizon is not an option for me at all. The isolation in the lower part should be fully intentional," and Ken's, "The low light angle brings out every grain of foreground texture and makes for a wonderful combination of lines and curves, from the inverted L of ...that stranger's) body to the way the shadows cross the tire tracks."

Hi Ryan,
Beautiful! The sunset light is very well and you has taken great advantage of it! It's a graphical composition very interesting: the cros off the car's traces and the shadows is really good. I like too the vast space, the context given for the people here! I don't know what's the problem you figure out! I like how you has cropped the shot, the fact you has cropped the right trace, but that's good in my opinion, because we have in the corner just the space between the two traces! Perhaps the overexposure in the upper left, but that's not a great problme here! Well... One thing is true: you make us to think very much! Great shot!
Greetings,
Angel.

Hey Ryan,
Great shot with excellent shadows and light. I really can't see anything wrong with this shot, I love the expansive view and the long shadows of the people which I think adds here. But like most say here, everybody has their own opinion and I love this shot! Excellent work, Ryan!

Hi, RYan. Well, I suppose the problem is the UFO had just taken off a few seconds before the shot and you arrived late ;o). Apart from that, I like the beautiful curving track left by the tyres leading us into the photograph and dividing it into two parts with the detectives on the left and the landscape on the right. Nice shadows and light.

Hi Ryan, great image!
the composition, the lines, the tracks on the sand...
perhaps the strong vertical shadow of the people contrast to much with the shape of the car in a bad direction..
anyway i like it a lot!

Ryan,
Great shot, some ways sparse and mysterious; what are these people doing? - we wonder!
In my book, they are not very bright detectives on the trail of a fugitive in a stolen car. They find a discarded cigarette end and wonder if he might have passed this way.

Hi Ryan! I see maybe 2 things wrong but they are very subtle. One, since the right tire track is cut off it interrupts the symmetry we expect of having 2 tracks clearly seen. Two, but this one I am not too sure about, the really thin shadow doesn't seem consistent with the lady's arm. Perhaps that is a tripod leg?
Nonetheless, very good B&W conversion and beautiful capture of the contrasty light.

Hi Ryan, first time i saw this picture was a morning drinking a coffee ... I asked myself : Ryan must be very hard on himself, perfectionist to write a note like that ;)
Strange Ryan ... ;) But for sure best photogrpahers are those who always ask themselves to be better, to be exigent ... and you are one of them, no doubt on that fact.

Simply one of the best, nost pristine uploads on TE, in my humble view. Is there something wromg with it? I HOPE so, Ryan, just can't for the life of me figure it out.. Much as I would have an easier time critiquing some of your earlier color work (andscape, architectural, which is not my thing at all), I think here you are flying very high indeed and you have transcended those genres to create a mood, a (here I go again) cinematic moment, and well, that's alright by me...;o)

Hey Ryan,
Your note makes it more ambiguous, making me stare more beyond what we're looking for? The result IMO is very good, kinda fall in between a reactive or planned scenario, those marked foot or tire treks, in search for evidence? Lost in space/earth? I see a very good style here -just can't say what it is, the harsh lighting is given, gives those shadows justice from your POV...the juxtaposition of space, the untouched, empty space , those trekkers just added the exploitation of the possibility. Well done!
Cheers!

Hi Ryan,
Great black and white shot! I've searched and searched and searched and I can't seem to find anything wrong with this photo!? I can only make stuff up, like the horizon is slightly tilted, the man's footsteps don't seem to lead to his feet, who knows? Maybe these people are your family like some people say, but I don't know that, so it doesn't make it anything wrong in the photo to me! Hhmmm, maybe the only thing wrong........is that it is a damn fine shot that we all wish we could take! Oops, am I allowed to say damn on this sit, crap did it again! In any event, this is a great shot, with nothing wrong, in my opinion! :o)

Hello Ryan,
is it me or you took a new tangent in the last months? I mean you always were an exceptional landscape shooter, but now, you seem to be willing to go further with it, creating moods and showing what seems to be cinematographic content. I really liked Citizen Cane and Midnight Oil in the last series (worth the look just for the titles!).
The first thing that really caught my eyes is the number of footprints...you went there to see for yourself before they went, did you?
I like the looong shadow and most of all how they are both bent to look at the ground in such a way that they actually share the same shadow. Did you notice how the details of the ground's texture were more visible in the shades than in the sun. this shadow is actually the main feature of this picture in my opinion.
there are other tire prints in the distance. If it's on another planet, you'd better watch your back man because it seems to me that you are not alone!;)
The strong highlight in the upper left corner is disturbing but I guess it was a lot worse in the color version
This picture really was worth a long look and with your note, you kind of obliged us at watching it more carefully, Good work!
Take care!

Hi Ryan,
I didn't read all the posts, there are way too many! Just wanted to add my words: congratulations! That's a very impressive photo, and the shadows, the B&W etc are just so perfect. Somehow, there are some elements that help guessing the date: maybe that's the point you said is wrong? I wouldn't care as the message is much above this layer, for me...
Cheers,
Pascal
