Photographer's Note
Dakota Dawn in Purple.
Lake Mitchell - Mitchell, South Dakota.
Hey it is my 50th post .. and you know I came to this realization today that what TE was really missing would be images of sunrises over water ... no - I just wanted to take a moment to express my profound thanks to all of you for your helpful advice and friendship.
If it looks familiar this is the same dawn as my post Dakota Dawn
This is a bunch more zoom and just a bit earlier than that post ...it is always amazing to me how quickly things change at a sunrise .. the sun being just enough below the horizon here that it doesn't silhouette the trees and gives that wonderful shade to the sky (but doesn't make the clouds as wonderfully accented as they will me in a few minutes) ...
The funny story here is that I was all set up about a quarter mile back from here and decided that spot was not working well and was rushing back to my car when I saw this comp. off the fishing bridge over the marsh at the lake margin and took this set.
Ruthlessly pasted from another Lake Mitchell shot - Dakota Autumn:
This a quiet place down the road from my parents place .. when I am home I can often sneak off for a quiet morning or two here and get some good practice with the camera .. this is one of my favorite spots on the lake.
South Dakota is most often associated with the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore .. or Native American culture .. or for those of us with cameras maybe the Badlands .. all of these things are found in the vast arid ranch land that makes up the "West River" half of the state ... I grew up in "East River" South Dakota .. a humid farming area similar to Minnesota and Iowa ..
From an earlier image:
My dad is a historian and archeologist. In
the early 1970s he excavated a prehistoric probably pre Mandan village
on the lake. Now there is a major dig on the site .. but a good portion of the site goes under this man made lake. The burial grounds are under the local golf course .. which is why it has such nice rolling hills (sarcasm). I guess we call all this progress
again thank you all .. hope to have many more.
John

Hi John, I like the previous post better. This one is nice, but it lacks of sharpness. And the colors are a little bit not fit well here. Anyway, my big concern is the sharpness. Sothy

John,
This is an interesting photo. The colors and lighting are great! The sharpness is not as good as most of your work but it is not bad!

Hi John, just for the colour alone its got to be worth two points, ok perhaps it lacks a wee bit of sharpness but its still a beautiful photo and well worth showing us, and ach well as we all know we cant get it 100% right all the time lol, Im glad if I get it 60% right on an avrage and thats why I joined to learn, even if our feelings get a dunt now and again, in the end most of the time it helps us to get our brain focused before we take a photo as we know when we post it, it can get us a pat on the back or a good slap on the ear! lol.
Must admit I prefer the pat on the back!, but I would like to think that I do take more care now when I am out than I did a few months ago.
Kind regards from you Old Scots Buddy.

Hello John,
While it may not be pin sharp, this is still a lovely image with an ethereal quality about it. The tones and the reflections on thw water are quite superb. The composition, although somewhat minimalist, is very effective.

Hallo John!
The colours here are amazing. Nature is the best painter, your picture is a proof for this. I like the stripes on the water and the interesting note. A picture wich gives calm...
Greetings from again grey, dull and cold Germany!...and keep on posting! ;-)

Hi John,
You have caught a very moody sade of purple framing the high banks of this pretty lake. It seem to beckond to older times when there was prehaps a Native American village on this lovely lake.

Hi John,
Congrats with the 50th shot. Hope you have had a nice Christmas with your family. I've just visited your site, I like the photo's on it, for each section? Have you made them to?
For this photo, lovely colours, nice reflection on the water too, also like the pattern on the water, some darker area's etc. I think the focus on the bushes, or their silhouettes, could have been a bit better, maybe the camera had a hard time to focus because of the low light and lot's of sky.
Some extra interest, maybe on the foreground, could have been nice to, but well.. just the colours are so fine, so I'll reward you for that.
Have a good ending of this year, hope 2007 will be a good year for you and your family.

Hello John,
Informative note accompanying an exquisite photo. I am beginning to believe your wisdom, getting as much image for the 800 pixels allowed. The size of the image here is perfect, and would be robbed if a frame took up part of the photo. There is a surrealistic lavender in the image, which is so beautifully composed. Warm regards,
Bulent

Great Photo. My family comes from the Milbank area and I recall so many sunsets over the Big Stone Lake area just like this. Wonderful colors.
