Winter Herd

Elk herd - Rocky Mountain National Park

Continuing along with my shooting day off of December 18 .. I think this is #5 ... anyhow .. This large herd was just inside the entrance station today .. this is only a small part of it .. they wind all along around the mountain in the background .. my last post of the big boy was around the corner and up the mountain side .. in this same large group ..

I am planning on posting an alternate view from the workshop ..

I was surprised at how this turned out after a bit of PP .. the noon sun is just to the right .. over the mountain .. it took a bit of work to get this picture together ..

ruthlessly pasted from my previous elk posts:
One of the most common animals in Rocky Mountain National Park is the North American Elk or Wapiti ... The elk were hunted to near extinction in the area then reintroduced in 1913. By the time of their reintroduction most of their natural predators had also been hunted to extinction and the elk have now almost taken over .. the population in Rocky Mountain National Park ranges from 1,000-3,000 depending on the season.

These are pretty large animals they can range up to 1100 pounds (495 kg) and five feet at the shoulder.
