Photographer's Note

Mooney Falls, Havasu Canyon.

Havasu Canyon is a beautiful canyon draining to the Colorado River in Northern Arizona. It actually shares a border with Grand Canyon National Park. The entrance to Havasu Canyon is usually via a long hike to the village of Supai on the Havasupai Nation Indian reservation. Rafters on float trips enter the canyon via its terminus with the Colorado. And sometimes interestingly enough, hikers and rafters jubiliantly meet at the river.

Some time ago I posted a picture of a more frequently photographed waterfall in this special place, Havasu Falls. This one here is much harder to get to and as a result you don't tend to see as many pictures.

This particular spot is not too difficult to obtain but going further and getting down to the base of the waterfall requires a hair-raising descent on a series of steep, slippery mist-soaked chains and ladders. The shots you take home are definitely "earned". I hope to post a picture from the base also.

I took this shot after an all-day hike that went from Havasu Falls all the way to the Colorado River and back about 16 miles and it featured many refreshing thigh high or higher creek crossings. As I was finishing my climb out, this was my last "looking back" memory of this beautiful, classically American Southwest canyon.

While I took this shot well over a year ago, it wasn't until tonight while I was cleaning up a spare room that I got around to looking at this particular batch. As you can see, the workflow in the film/digital darkroom is sometimes very slow.

Post-processing included:
magenta color cast correction
noise reduction on the pool below the fall
midtones levels adjustment
usm sharpening 230%, 0.6 radius, 5 px threshold

Regards,
Doug
