Photographer's Note
Whew! It's good to be back. I'm sneaking in a shot while I have a few moments. Busy semester!
I used to hate snow, having moved to Utah, with it's famous powdery snow, from California. I never did trade in my surfboard for skis, but I have learned to really enjoy winter. As a photographer, I find it one of the most exciting times to shoot.
This is in the steep canyon just above Heber City, Utah. There are few ways to get from the western part of the state to the eastern part in winter, and this is one of the three roads, often closed, that allow one to do so.
The Christmassy trees at left are sub-alpine firs. The other sare Utah Junipers. The snow was coming in at an angle, but you'll be proud of me as I set up my tripod in the freezing weather. I kept a plastic bag on the camera to keep it dry, and when taking the actual shot, I had to remove my hat and cover the camera. Brrrrr!
The next day, the snow was three feet deeper here, and clear skies made for some fine snow shoeing!
(See the workshop for a b/w version of this photo. I'm weird with color, as many of you know, but I did prefer the subtle blues and greens and cyans in the color. I'd love to know what you think!).

Hi David, nice to see you find time to fit a photo in between your busy schedule. This is an evocative rendition of winter, well composed with the dispersed trees in front and the V-shape from the converging hillsides behind. The snowstorm with the flakes coming in at a 45° angle is nicely rendered (and I think better so in the color than in the b&w version).

Bonjour David.
Vous faites vos prιvisions mιtιorologiques pour l'hiver qui s'annonce prochainement.
Je pense que ce sera rude.
Une composition trθs apprιciable.
J'ai fait un WS juste pour le fun.
Hello David. You make your weather forecasting for the winter which is announced soon. I think that it will be hard.
A very appreciable composition. I made a WS just for the fun.

I really like the green and blue tones over the b/w. I absolutely love snow and I love that you shot this while the snow was falling. A great composition!

Bonsoir David,
La neige. C'est de la lumiθre dont la terre est couverte. Des franges d'ιcume sur les rochers. Un vol de papillons blancs.

Moving from California to Utah, less said about that the better. The colours on the composition are great. So often everything seems grey when it's snowing. I like your work here and the b/w is probably a touch more pleasing. But overall this colour version is pretty good.

Hi David. It's good to see you to be able to post a new one. The little bit of blur certainly spices things up. I do like the blue color cast. Actually the b/w's are nice too. Well seen David.

I like the soft focus and low light you have captured here - very subtle :)

The tripod you used (perhaps at the cost of a couple of fingers to frostbite) really helped here, as you used an exposure long enough to allow the snow to show as diagonal streaks. That's got to be why this really brings the feel of a snowstorm.
I'm wondering about the strong greenish tint in the snow, though, as though it was shot through a tinted window. Not a major detraction, it just seems slightly unnatural. I think I prefer the B/W here, David, though the falling snow is not quite as visible. Both versions are successful, though, no question! Regards, Ken.

Hi David
I like the aerial perpective & depth in this superb winter scene. The graphism of the dark pine trees is accentuated by the snow. Good work!

Hi David - yes it good to be back ever now and then ;-) - I like the weird colour - it somehow natural for this kind of light - our autumn this year quite warm and its hard to image snow at x-mass - thanks for sharing this fine job.

Hi David,
You are antecipating the winter but we are near. In Portugal we don't have too much this scenery but I love it. Here you present us a snow storm very well captured and with a nice composition. Simple but effective resulting picture. Excelent enquadrement, light handling and composition.
Congratulations and all the best to you.

Brrr! Excellent composition with the deep valley in the background. I prefer the colour version as I like B&W with very strong contrast, but maybe it is a bit too green. I like Didi's WS too.

Interesting setting David. Kind of soft almost blurred impression - could be snow crystals (lack some exif datas).
I think of this original and the ws versions that this one works best - just as the green trees makes a nice contrast to the white. Compowise nice details included and a good choice to have the square format.
