Photographer's Note

Volcanic gases and ground-water steam raise from this area near the rim of Kilauea Caldera. The gases contain carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and hydogen sulfide which smells like rotten eggs. Some gases form crystals while others react with lava rock to form a bright yellow and brown coloring of the ground.
