Photographer's Note
As mentioned in my travelogue, Mount Rainier has 26 glaciers, more than any other US mountain, excluding Alaska. The terminus of Nisqually Glacier is only a mile from this viewpoint. The viewpoint is reached by a 1.2 mile loop trail through meadows and forest, starting from Paradise Visitor's Centre. The glaciers are "dirty" because they become covered in soil and in some parts vegetation grows. You can see here just off-centre, the origin of the Nisqually River. All the rivers here originating from glaciers are a muddy brown because of the sediment in the ice. This glacier also has huge truck-sized blocks of ice, which are rolling down the glacier at a rate of 3 ft a day; this is known as the Nisqually Icefall.
As with my other posts I had several shots to choose from; the others are framed by trees, an effect I usually like, but I chose this one because I think the mountain looks more majestic and also it shows more detail. A tough choice between composition and the other objective of this site, to show people who have not been here, something new.
As it was a bright day the exposure was set at -0.7
PP very little - just curves tweaking
Please look at the WS to see another glacier. Those of you following my travelogue may be interested to see a close-up of one.

A beautifull composition with this mountain and the glacier. Great colors with the blue sky contrasting with the snow.
Well done

Gorgeous colors and a very interesting note, Kath! The blue sky is positively startling. Rainier is one of my favorite places, it is breathtaking, isn't it?

Does most of this glacier just look like normal rock? You said it was dirty but you can hardly seeit at all!
The mountain certainly looks majesti in this shot, with nothing else to steal its limelight its hte one dominating element of the photo!
Well taken!

Hi Kath, just catching up with some of your photos as I've been a bit busy lately.
This is another great photo of Mount Rainier. I like the way you have composed the shot with a sweep from the lower left corner and then on to the snow covered peak.
When looking at the image it's hard to appreciate the immense size until you notice the surrounding trees.

Hi Kath,
I like the way you've framed your shot to show sweep of the glacier from the mountain top down to its tip and the river being born. You don't waste any space here the frame is full of this colossal mountain framed against the bluest sky. You've captured excellent close-up detail. Well Done!!
Regards, Pat
