Photographer's Note
This area of Charleston was built in the 1700s. I liked the cobblestones in the alley. It was a very cloudy day yesterday and I wasn't sure what to do with the sky. Any suggestions are welcome.

Despite an overexposed sky, this is a nice shot, it shows another part of America, empty of modernity and skyscrappers.

I think that you have the same problem as everybody, when you want to photograph at the same time a darker place with a clearer sky. Your apparatus is regulated on the dark part and the sky is over-exposed. I do not have a solution except to remove the sky. Here, you can easily eliminate a good part, to the standard lamp with the top of "magniolias". In any event, it is very well done in spite of the sky.
Bravo!

I was drawn to this picture because it shows a part of the US many of we Brits don't know exist. We think we have the monopoly on "Antique". Thank you for sharing it. As for your sky exposure problem it's a perenial problem over here; we sometimes forget that the sky can be blue! I'm on a course at the moment and the instructor recommends buying a grey-grad filter (probably no use here as it would effect the tops of the buildings). Alternatively take 2 shots on a tripod, one exposed for the sky, the other exposed for the buildings and "marry" them together on Photoshop. Again not easy because of the trees in this shot.It would work with an uninterrupted horizon though. Sorry not to be any help.

Hi Alli
for us north americans this kind of architecture is priceless ... yes I loved this photo ... but for most europeans this might be just an ordinary photo ... ha ha
nice place .... if you ever come to canada you should visit Quebec city ... that is the only place we (canadians) got with some sort of history to it .. lols
by the way ... i love taking shots on a cloudy day as the contrast between dark and light objects get minimized ... only thing I can recommend about this shot is that maybe you should have over exposesed it a bit ... but it is always a dilemma of balance ... it is a pretty good shot nevertheless
thanks for sharing ... cheers ... sarju

I like shots like this - I've done the same perspective on country roads & railways - always looks good. This would work well in B&W too. (I took the liberty of downloading it and rendering it into B&W - looks good) Great shot! My only comment/critique is that if there were no-one at the end of the lane then the picture would seem much more somber.
