Photographer's Note

This was on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They have an admirable collection of Egyptian antiquities on display. Since I study agricultural history, I thought this was really cute: it was found, as most artifacts relating to ancient Egypt are, in a tomb, where the accoutrements of daily life were meticulously reproduced in miniature, for use by the deceased in the afterlife. Egyptians greatly valued their cattle: instead of conducting a census for people, they conducted a census of cattle to determine the wealth of various districts, or nomes, under the administration of the king's officials. This one was very poignant and personal.
