Photographer's Note
Mention Arizona and a few things immediately come to mind: the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, the red rock of Sedona, and the saguaro cactus. What you don't think of is volcanoes and lava flows. But, the latter is the reason for the singularity of this saguaro. On an ancient lava flow south of the Painted Rocks Petroglyph Park windblown dust and sand has covered the flow with just enough gritty dirt to support this sparse vegetation.
