Photographer's Note
Looking south out of the Stockton Street Tunnel, trying to learn from the challenge of photographing deep shadows and bright sunlit street scenes.
I heard a professional this weekend (Nevada Wier -- see nevadawier.com) say that shooting in RAW allows us 4 stops of exposure latitude. I do not understand all of what that means, but I will tell you that this shot is processed using my favorite technique these days. Pull two versions out of RAW, about 2 stops apart, then using a layer mask, combine the shadow detail of the lighter version with the highlight detail of the darker one. Not completely successful, and not true HDR, but you see the results.
I also have to add -- my experience is limited, but there is a small group of cities in this world that are simply and completely photogenic: Paris (of course), Prague, and I would nominate San Francisco also. There are others, and I know I have not seen them all! But a day in San Francisco with a camera is like being in a candy store.

Hello Russ, Interesting view from the tunnel on the busy crossing. Yes, San Francisco is very photogenic city, I think it is the most beautiful in USA. Paris, prague, I would add Rome and Barcelona.
Good light management in difficult conditions. Regards Malgo

Your use the arch as frame to showing the very busy city with trams and crane in background.

Composition and presentation are pleasant.
Very well done, TFS.

Hello Russ,
using the bridge as a frame works very well as does the technique of combining the two exposures.
A nice imaginative piece of photography.
Regards Les.

Hi Rus,
Excellent view from tunnel to busy roar. Nicely controlled light. The view is well framed by the bridge arch.
Very well done.

Hello Russ,
I've never been there, but, from what I have seen in pictures and films, I will readily agree with your opinion about San Francisco. I'm not familiar at all with the technique you are describing but I find your picture very interesting for the way our glance and perception are led to proceed from the darker and blurry foreground to a view out of the tunnel that is superbly defined, deep and clear. I also like the impression of movement that is created not so much by actual movement but by your composition. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,
Ourania
