Photographer's Note
According to National Postal Museum's website, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has no official creed or motto. However, an inscription on the James Farley Post Office in New York City is taken to be the USPS creed by many. This inscription is a translation by Prof. George Herbert Palmer of Harvard University, from an ancient Greek work of Herodotus describing the Persian system of mounted postal carriers c. 500 B.C.E:
"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."
It was added to the building by William Mitchell Kendall of the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, the building's architects. It derives from a quote from Herodotus' Histories, referring to the courier service of the ancient Persian Empire:
"It is said that as many days as there are in the whole journey, so many are the men and horses that stand along the road, each horse and man at the interval of a day’s journey; and these are stayed neither by snow nor rain nor heat nor darkness from accomplishing their appointed course with all speed."
—Herodotus, Histories (8.98) (trans. A.D. Godley, 1924)
We are having the first snowstorm of the season today, predicted to last until midnight tomorrow. Geneva ended classes early (11:00 AM rather than 5:00 PM) for Thanksgiving break, before the storm came. Meetings were cancelled tonight and the children's school is cancelled for tomorrow. I took this photo this afternoon, when it started snowing. Our postwoman was making her usual round and this scene reminded me of the unofficial motto of USPS.
- Herodot, Tarihler (8.98) (Ηev. A. D. Godley, 1924)
Biz bugόn sezonun ilk kar fırtınası yaşıyoruz, yarın gece yarısına kadar tahmin ediliyor. Geneva fırtına gelmeden φnce, Şόkran Gόnό tatili iηin sınıfları erken (17:00 yerine 11:00'de) sona erdirdi.

Hi Murat,
I do not envy the job of this USPS courier - such tricky conditions having to make deliveries in the snow...
Your notes are very interesting - this company certainly managed to adopt strong delivery policies no matter what... & the workers just have to weather the storm so to speak.
Kindest regards,
Dawn.

Hello Murat,
You're capturing well this daily scene by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the spectacle in which the compact van by USPS is scuttling the snow road. It's simple and good design. So, we always thank to public postal service in everyday. That will be because profit is ignored and it contributes to civic social life by the means of transfer. It is an existence precious to the residents who live especially in the depopulated district. In Japan, the post office is performing insurance and storage business at the office other than original delivery.
Kind regards,
mikio

Yeah, the work for the post is not easy-regardless of the weather mails must be delivered.
Excellent daily-life composition with good reference to the current weather situation.

Hi Murat,
I like this excellent winter snapshot, so typical for this season. I like your title, "Neither snow, nor rain", we have very often during November/December in Swiss lowlands. Excellent POV. Well done.
Greetings

Neither snow or rain will stop the mail delivery...but perhaps warm sun, with temperature in the 60s as today. We did not receive the mail here in balmy northern California, and perhaps an early Thanksgiving vacation?
Fine snow mail scene,
Cheers,

Hello Murat,
I like the way the post office truck stands out in the snow. Here in NYC we only got rain - a lot of rain. This is a classic small-town USA winter photo, even though winter hasn't formally started yet. :-)

Hello Murat,
I like very much both your picture and your note. My best friend from school and her husband are postpeople in Munich, Germany, and she has told me about the difficulties posed by the weather and about how much she loves her job. You've captured the scene perfectly. The falling snow is lovely and the luminosity of the white landscape has been moderated superbly. The van is well placed in the frame and the person inside it looks mysterious. The few warm colours are eye-catching and lovely. You've captured the atmosphere most effectively. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,
Ourania

Hi Murat,
Having just returned from northern Arizona, I can relate to this scene of snow. It also helps that I'm originally from SLC, so the concept is not all that foreign to me. :) This pretty much sums up the motto for the USPS, and it a great representation of their will to deliver no matter the conditions.
I really like that this is something different than what we usually see here, it's a refreshing take on the every moments that we most often take for granted...and it's perfect for the season!
Have a great week ahead. All the best,
Jason
